The View From the Esplanade
We love this terrace. Push up a sash window at Carnock and the first thing you see is the Atlantic: South Beach below, the green humps of Caldey Island and Giltar Point on the horizon, and the Palmerston fort silhouetted on the small tidal islet of St Catherine's closer in. The Esplanade runs directly outside, hugging the cliff above the sand, lined by the green iron railings and cream-stuccoed Victorian houses that have been Tenby's seafront since the 1870s.
Carnock is the sage-green corner of that terrace, an eleven-unit Grade II-listed apartment block where six of the seven room types come with their own kitchen and the front apartments look directly out to the sea. Couples rate the location above everything else here, and that tells you what they're coming for: a seafront room with the medieval walled town five minutes behind it, not a chain hotel on the inland bypass.
Five Minutes to the Old Town, Steps to the Sand
Carnock's other quiet advantage is what you can do without ever opening the car. Cross the Esplanade and South Beach starts at the foot of the railings, 1.5 miles of clean sand running south to Giltar Point. Walk the cliff path the other way and Castle Beach, Tenby Castle and the volunteer-run Palmerston fort on St Catherine's Island are seven minutes east, the fort reachable on its causeway at low tide. From here, the whole of medieval Tenby is on foot: the Tudor Merchant's House (National Trust) and the Five Arches gateway in five, the harbour with its pastel townhouses and the Easter-to-October Caldey Island monastery boat in seven.
Tenby has stayed deliberately small. You can do the museum (the oldest independent in Wales, opened 1878), a fish supper from Fecci's on Lower Frog Street, dinner at Plantagenet House inside Tenby's oldest building and a pint at Harbwr Brewery Tap on the harbour in a single afternoon without walking the same street twice. The Pembrokeshire Coast Path runs straight through town, so a dog and a decent pair of boots are all you need for a serious day out.
A Whole Apartment, Not a Hotel Room
Carnock is properly self-catering. The kitchens are fitted to let you cook a real breakfast in front of a sea view, throw together a simple supper after a long beach day, or reheat last night's takeaway from the harbour. The Sea View Double is the only room-only exception, kept that way for couples who plan to eat out. Coffee in hand, the boats start moving on the bay around eight; nobody's queuing for hotel breakfast service downstairs because there isn't one, and the day starts at your pace.
The layouts give you a choice of how you want to do Tenby. The Studio with Sea View puts a couple on the front of the building with the headline three-island view. The One-Bedroom Basement is the quiet pick, its own private entrance and no upstairs footsteps. The largest basement apartment sleeps six with two walk-in shower bathrooms and its own outdoor seating area, the obvious choice when two couples or a family of six want one roof and one kitchen. Dogs welcome across the whole building at £12 per stay, free Wi-Fi everywhere, and a £200 cash damage deposit on arrival is the only thing we'd flag to bring with you.

South Beach
Across the Esplanade from the front of Carnock, the 1.5-mile sandy strand that the front apartments look directly out over towards Caldey Island, St Catherine's Island and the Palmerston Fort on the islet. Tide tables matter: St Catherine's Island is reached by a causeway only at low tide, and Castle Beach in the other direction is fully tidal. Lifeguard cover runs in summer; the gradient suits paddlers and families.

Tenby Harbour
7 min walk
A seven-minute walk north past the Tudor Merchant's House, the pastel-painted harbour is the postcard you've seen of Tenby. Seasonal Caldey Island boats leave from the harbour kiosk Easter–late October (weather permitting), the Lifeboat Tavern sits on Tudor Square one street back, and the Stowaway Coffee Co. at 2 Penniless Cove is a few minutes further on. The Plantagenet House restaurant on Quay Hill (inside Tenby's oldest building) is the harbour's special-occasion address.

Caldey Island
20 min ferry
Twenty minutes by boat from Tenby Harbour, the 2.5-square-kilometre Caldey Island is a working Cistercian monastery known for monk-made chocolate, lavender perfume and the cliff-top lighthouse on the southern tip. Day trips run Easter to late October; tickets are sold at the harbour kiosk on the day (not online). The island's Priory of St Illtud and the medieval St Illtud's Church are open to walkers, and the small beach at Priory Bay is the calm-water alternative to South Beach if the swell on the mainland is up.

- Exit Tenby Station onto Warren Street: Tenby (TEN) is unstaffed; exit the platform onto Warren Street. The station opened in 1871 and the Grade II listed Victorian building is straight ahead.
- Cross Upper Park Road past the Multi-Storey: Use the pedestrian crossing in front of the Tenby Multi-Storey Car Park (SA70 7LT) and continue south down Warren Street.
- Walk through the South Parade onto St Florence Parade: Warren Street becomes South Parade; the medieval Five Arches gateway is on your left. Continue downhill onto St Florence Parade, then turn left onto The Esplanade along the seafront.
- Arrive at Carnock on the corner of Sutton Street: Carnock House is at the eastern end of the first Esplanade terrace, on the corner of Sutton Street. The Clarence Hotel reception (where you collect the key) is diagonally opposite at 1–3 The Esplanade. Total walk: about 4–5 minutes.
