Cheltenham is a Regency spa town on the western edge of the Cotswolds, and two calendars decide what a stay here costs and whether you can get one at all. The first belongs to the racecourse at Prestbury Park, two and a half miles north. The second belongs to the festivals the town is named for.
Get the timing right and it is one of the easiest towns in England to enjoy on foot: wide tree-lined promenades, cream stucco terraces, garden squares, and the Cotswold escarpment close enough to walk up. Get it wrong and you will be booking a room in another county.
This is Cheltenham in Gloucestershire, postcode district GL50 to GL53. Not Cheltenham in Victoria or New South Wales, not Cheltenham Township in Pennsylvania, and not the ones in Maryland or Ontario. If the page you are reading mentions a Melbourne train line, you are in the wrong hemisphere.
When to visit Cheltenham
March is the exception to everything. The Cheltenham Festival runs Tuesday 16 to Friday 19 March 2027, four days of jump racing ending with the Gold Cup, and it fills the town and the villages around it. If you want to be here that week, book far ahead and expect to pay for it. If you do not, avoid it entirely.
The rest of the racing calendar matters too, just less. The Jockey Club lists the William Hill Showcase on 23 and 24 October 2026, the November Meeting on 13 to 15 November 2026, the Christmas Meeting on 11 and 12 December 2026, New Year's Day racing on 1 January 2027, Festival Trials Day on 30 January 2027 and the April Meeting on 14 and 15 April 2027.
Then the festivals. The Literature Festival runs 9 to 18 October 2026 and is the town's flagship. Jazz, Science and Music fill the spring and early summer. Their 2027 dates were not all announced when we checked, so confirm with the organisers rather than trusting a listing.
Midweek is busier than a spa town should be, because GCHQ at Benhall and the Golden Valley development beside it bring steady business travel that has nothing to do with racing or festivals.
The quiet windows are late January and February outside the race fixtures, and the gaps between festival weekends. Summer suits the walking and the Lido; October suits the Literature Festival and the escarpment in colour.
Best areas to stay in Cheltenham
Cheltenham is compact, so almost everywhere central works. The question is what you want on the doorstep.
Bath Road and the Suffolks
Best for: independent shops and eating out without a taxi. Skip if: you want silence. Getting around: on foot.
The independent shopping spine running south out of the centre, with the Suffolks alongside it. The Bell Inn sits at number 70, a Grade II listed Regency inn of 1809 with free parking beside it. From its door the Town Hall is four minutes, the Promenade six, and Sandford Parks Lido eight. The Cheltenham Playhouse is seventy-six metres away. The trade-off is the road, which carries traffic.
Montpellier
Best for: the best concentration of bars and restaurants. Skip if: you want quiet evenings. Getting around: on foot.
The town's most fashionable quarter, with garden squares, boutiques and a dense run of places to eat. It adjoins the Suffolks, so a Bath Road base puts you on its edge without paying Montpellier prices.
The Promenade and the centre
Best for: first visits. Skip if: you want residential calm. Getting around: everything on foot.
The showcase boulevard, with Neptune's Fountain, the Imperial Gardens, the Town Hall and the main shopping all within a few hundred metres.
Lansdown
Best for: early trains. Skip if: you want to walk into town in two minutes. Getting around: the D bus, or a mile-and-a-half walk.
The genteel district around Cheltenham Spa station. Useful if you are arriving or leaving by rail, but be clear that the station is not central.
Pittville and Prestbury
Best for: the park, and race days. Skip if: you want nightlife. Getting around: on foot to Pittville, a car or the D and E buses to the course.
Pittville is the grand Regency district around the Pump Room and its park, and the walking route north towards the racecourse. Prestbury is the village closest to the course itself.
Leckhampton and Charlton Kings
Best for: walkers and Cotswolds touring. Skip if: you have no car. Getting around: a car.
The southern and eastern suburbs under the escarpment, closest to Leckhampton Hill, the Devil's Chimney and the Cotswold Way.

Getting to Cheltenham and around it
The station is the thing people get wrong. Cheltenham Spa sits about a mile and a half west of the centre, in Lansdown. It is not a two-minute walk into town. Stagecoach service D covers it in roughly ten minutes, a taxi in about five, and on foot it is twenty to twenty-five minutes along the traffic-free Honeybourne Line path rather than the road. The D and E corridor also runs on to the racecourse, which is useful on race days.
By train. Great Western Railway runs from London Paddington, and CrossCountry serves Birmingham and Bristol. Sunday services are thinner than weekdays across the board, so check the specific day rather than the weekday pattern.
By coach. National Express calls at Royal Well, right in the centre.
By road, and the junction that catches people out. Use M5 junction 11 or 11A. Junction 10 has long carried restricted movements and is currently a live building site: development consent was granted in June 2025, construction began in spring 2026 and completion is expected around 2028. Anything you read describing J10 as a finished all-movements junction is ahead of reality.
Flying. Gloucestershire Airport at Staverton handles general aviation only, so there are no scheduled passenger flights. Bristol and Birmingham are the real options.
Parking is tight and time-limited in the centre, and hardest during Festival week and on festival weekends. A property with its own parking is worth more here than in most towns.
What to do in Cheltenham
The Wilson, the town's art gallery and museum on Clarence Street, is free with a suggested donation and opens Tuesday to Saturday 10:00 to 17:00 and Sunday 10:00 to 16:00, closed Mondays. Its Arts and Crafts gallery, the collection it is best known for, has been closed since 1 June 2026 for works, so check before you make a special trip for it.
Regency Cheltenham is the walk: the Promenade and Neptune's Fountain, the Imperial and Montpellier Gardens, Cheltenham Town Hall, the Regent Arcade with its Wishing Fish Clock, and the Everyman Theatre. Further north, the Pittville Pump Room is the grandest surviving spa building in the town, set in a large park with lakes.
Sandford Parks Lido is a fifty-metre open-air heated pool that opened in 1935 and runs a summer season, roughly March to October. It is a short walk from the Bath Road end of the centre.
The Cheltenham Playhouse on Bath Road is the independent theatre most visitors miss entirely, and the Everyman covers the larger touring productions.
Walking. Leckhampton Hill and the Devil's Chimney sit directly above the town to the south. Cleeve Hill, the highest point of the Cotswolds, is about ten minutes away by car, and the Cotswold Way runs along the escarpment.
As a Cotswolds base, Sudeley Castle at Winchcombe is about seventeen minutes by car, Bourton-on-the-Water around twenty-four and Broadway Tower thirty-four. The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway runs from Cheltenham Racecourse station towards Broadway.
