Crikvenica is the Kvarner coast's classic seaside resort, a 38-minute drive south-east of Rijeka, and the one thing that decides where you stay is the promenade. A palm-lined seafront path links Dramalj through Crikvenica town to Selce, so you can base yourself in a quieter resort and still walk to the beaches, cafes and harbour of the centre; Jadranovo, at the riviera's northern tip, is the exception where the bus or a car does the work. The real question is not how central you are but how much buzz you want outside your door.
This is a resort with proper pedigree. The grand seafront hotel later renamed the Therapia opened in 1895, a hydropathic institute followed in 1899, Crikvenica was declared a climatic health and sea resort in 1906, and the mild microclimate that drew Austro-Hungarian spa guests still shapes the town today. Expect a long pebble-and-sand shoreline with a Blue-Flag town beach, sparkling clean water, and views across the Vinodol Channel to Krk island rather than big-city sights.

When to visit Crikvenica
Best months. June and September are the sweet spot: the Adriatic is warm enough for long swims, the promenade is alive, and the crowds are a fraction of the July and August peak. Sea temperatures run from about 20°C in early summer to 26°C at the height of the season, so the swimming window stretches from June into early autumn.
The July and August reality. High summer is the busiest and hottest stretch. Metered promenade parking along Strossmayerovo šetalište fills early on July mornings, and accommodation across the four settlements books out well ahead, so reserve early and be on the beach before the mid-morning arrivals.
Shoulder seasons. The health-resort climate makes spring and autumn genuinely pleasant here. The riviera is laced with ten cycling routes and seven marked walking trails, including the 30 km Waves Trail from Povile to Jadranovo and the 28 km Karst and Sage Trail, and both the Via Adriatica and the Via Dinarica White Trail pass through the hinterland.

- Šilo–Crikvenica Swimming Marathon — 15 August: the oldest swimming marathon on the Adriatic, first swum in 1910, a fixed 3,500 m course from Šilo on Krk to Crikvenica's City Swimming Pool, now in its 116th edition
- Fishermen's Week (Ribarski tjedan) — late August into early September: Crikvenica's flagship festival reaches its 60th edition in 2026; exact dates are confirmed by the tourist board closer to the season
- Advent in Crikvenica — late November to 6 January: an ice rink on Stjepan Radić Square, programmes across all four settlements, and the seaside Adria Advent Marathon in late November
- Rijeka Carnival — 30 January and 7 February 2027: the children's parade and then the 44th International Carnival Parade along Rijeka's Korzo, an easy day out from Crikvenica
Quietest months. November to March, outside the Advent window and the run-up to the carnival. Many seasonal hotels and beach concessions close for winter, and one seafront stalwart, the Hotel Zagreb, is sitting out the 2026 season entirely.
Best areas to stay on the Crikvenica Riviera
The riviera is four settlements strung along one stretch of coast, marketed as a single destination and close enough that the choice is about atmosphere, not access.
Crikvenica centre and the seafront promenade
The heart of the resort, where Strossmayerovo šetalište runs between the palm trees and the Blue-Flag town beach, with the aquarium, the Kaštel and the harbour boats all a few minutes apart. Best for: first-timers and families who want the beach, cafes and shops across the road. Skip if: you want total seclusion in August. Getting around: everything is walkable, and the riviera buses and summer boats leave from the centre. Selce
The southern neighbour, a quieter resort with its own promenade and pebble beaches at Poli Mora and Rokan. Over the last two decades Crikvenica and Selce have effectively grown together, so you trade almost no convenience for the calm. Best for: couples and families who want a small-town feel with amenities still walkable. Skip if: you want the evening buzz of the main town on your doorstep. Getting around: the coastal promenade walk into Crikvenica, or a short hop on the local bus.
Dramalj
A village about 3 km north of the centre, with peaceful pebble coves and pine-shaded paths along the water. Best for: quiet, nature-leaning stays within easy reach of town. Skip if: you want restaurants and shops in volume. Getting around: the seafront path south into Crikvenica, with buses along the coast road.
Jadranovo
The northernmost and smallest of the four, gathered around Mulina bay, where the summer calendar still revolves around the Tuna Party and the Feast of St James. Best for: travellers who want the most local, tranquil base on the riviera. Skip if: you plan to be in Crikvenica town every evening. Getting around: a car helps here, though buses run the coast road.

Getting to Crikvenica and around
By air. Rijeka Airport (RJK) sits on Krk island about 30 km away, with a summer schedule running from late March to late October. Direct seasonal routes in 2026 include Munich, Frankfurt, Zurich, Cologne, London Stansted and several Polish cities. Pula and Trieste are the next-nearest alternatives, and Zagreb works with a longer transfer. Direct buses from the airport are limited, so most visitors book a driver transfer or pick up a hire car.
By bus. Arriva runs the Crikvenica to Rijeka corridor with frequent daily departures, a journey of about 40 to 45 minutes, and direct coaches connect Crikvenica with Zagreb and other Croatian cities.
Driving and parking. From the A6/A7 motorway network you descend through Rijeka to the coast road. The Krk Bridge has been toll-free since 2020, so island day trips cost nothing at the crossing. Promenade parking is metered and tight in high season; arrive early on July mornings or leave the car at your accommodation and walk. Rijeka itself is a 30 to 40 minute trip by road for a city day out, and Plitvice Lakes is a feasible long day trip at around 2 hours to 2 hours 20 each way.
By boat. In peak season passenger boats run from Crikvenica harbour across to Šilo on Krk in about 20 to 25 minutes, alongside panoramic riviera cruises, and a new seasonal Jadrolinija foot-passenger line links the riviera towards Baška and Rab; timetables change, so check locally.
Food and drink in Crikvenica
Eating here is a konoba culture: family-run taverns grilling whatever the boats landed that morning. Konoba Karoca, on Kotorska street back from the front, made the Falstaff International Restaurant Guide in 2025 and is the local name to book. For something sweet, Cafe Inter serves the traditional Frankopan cake, named for the counts whose 1412 Kaštel still anchors the old centre. Inland, the Vinodol valley behind the coast hides medieval hill towns like Drivenik, Grižane and Bribir among vineyards producing crisp local whites, an easy half-day loop by car. And because so many stays here are self-catering, the fishermen's evenings double as the best-value dinner on the riviera: grilled fish on the promenade with music thrown in.
