Titsey Place and Gardens
One of Surrey's largest surviving historic estates, about a mile and a half away and opened to the public by its foundation in 1993. The Regency dining room holds four gilt-framed Canalettos, and the house opens Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from mid-May to September.

Down House
Charles Darwin's home from 1842 until his death, where he wrote On the Origin of Species, now run by English Heritage with his study preserved and the sandwalk he paced while thinking still there to walk. Within a quarter of an hour's drive, and the gardens alone are worth the trip in June.

This corner where Surrey, Kent and Greater London meet is unusually dense with things worth seeing. Within a few miles of the green you have Churchill at Chartwell, Darwin at Down House, General Wolfe at Quebec House, Anne Boleyn at Hever Castle and a working English sparkling-wine estate at Squerryes. Westerham itself, a couple of miles east, has Churchill's statue on the green and a proper high street of pubs and antique shops.
The walking is the other half of it. The North Downs Way national trail runs through Tatsfield parish, and Botley Hill, the highest point on the whole of the North Downs, is close enough to build a morning around, with long views south over the Weald. Titsey Place's estate paths and the woods at Crockham Hill and Hosey Common fill the rest.
Time it for late spring to early autumn if you can, roughly April to September, when the National Trust and English Heritage houses are open, Titsey is running its Wednesday and weekend openings and the Squerryes vineyard tours are on. One note for planners: the Biggin Hill International Air Fair ended in 2010, so there is no airshow to build a trip around.

Guests describe the cooked breakfast as excellent and the beds and linen as unusually comfortable for a village B&B, and the staff come in for warm, specific praise, from remembering a phone left behind to finding a cooked meal for someone who arrived expecting the restaurant. The setting on the green is the other constant.
