Sherry and Bob live on the property and host it themselves. Sherry spent roughly 35 years running Best Western and Ramada hotels before this, and the difference shows in the small things guests keep writing about: the shoe horn left out, the bags carried upstairs, the lift to the airport, the berries and salad picked from the beds outside. It is a level of attention no front desk delivers.
Know the layout before you book. The bedroom sits upstairs under a high cedar ceiling that curves overhead like the inside of a hull, and the only bathroom is downstairs on the main floor. Both involve stairs, there is no lift, and that single fact decides whether this house suits you.
Cook Properly, Wash Properly, Stay a While
The kitchen is the reason people book this place for a week rather than a night. It is a proper domestic kitchen rather than a token kitchenette, fitted well enough that anyone who actually cooks will not spend the week improvising, and there is laundry in the unit too, which is why cyclists, skiers and long-haul travellers keep turning up. The one gap is a dishwasher, and no listing anywhere mentions that.
Groceries are a fifteen-minute walk away at the Crown Isle Shopping Centre, where Thrifty Foods, a liquor store and a coffee stop sit together. Eat out and the Timber Room at Crown Isle does steaks and salmon with a view over the fairways, a short stroll from the door. Guests routinely say the hosts' restaurant recommendation was the best meal of their trip, so ask them.
The Garden Is the Point
An acre sounds like a number until you are standing in it. Douglas firs close the far boundary, hydrangeas break white and blue against the shade, stepping stones wander between the beds, and the deck sits under a wisteria that has been trained across the pergola for years. Morning coffee happens out there. So does the evening glass, because the property is set back from the road and the loudest thing after dark is usually a bird.
Beyond the gate the Comox Valley opens up fast. Downtown Courtenay and the estuary Riverway walk are under two miles, the beaches at Kin Bay and Kye Bay are a quarter of an hour, and the ski runs and summer bike park at Mount Washington are about forty minutes up the Strathcona Parkway. Two miles from the house, a 6-minute drive, the Riverway follows the Courtenay River estuary on a flat paved path laid along an old logging-rail route, looping the Air Park in about two kilometres. It is the easiest good walk in town and the best birdwatching: herons stalking the tide flats, eagles in the cottonwoods, seals working the channel. Free, open year-round, and a short detour from the museum.

Nymph Falls Nature Park
10 min drive
A ten-minute drive up Forbidden Plateau Road, Nymph Falls spreads across 61 hectares of Puntledge River forest with falls, fish ladders and rock pools that locals swim in through the summer. Come back in October or November and the same ladders are full of returning salmon. Swimming is unsupervised and a siren sounds when the dam releases water, so listen for it.

Mount Washington Alpine Resort
40 min drive
About 30 km away, a 40-minute drive up the Strathcona Parkway, Mount Washington is Vancouver Island's only major alpine resort and the reason the valley fills up in winter. It takes one of the heaviest snowfalls of any ski area in North America, and in summer the lifts keep turning for the bike park, the ziptour and the walk into the Paradise Meadows boardwalk in Strathcona Provincial Park.

- From Comox Valley Airport (YQQ): About 7 km and ten minutes by car: head west on Ryan Road, then turn onto Mission Road. A taxi runs roughly CA$20 to CA$25 each way. Tell the hosts your flight time, because check-in closes at 20:00.
- From the Little River ferry terminal: Coming off the Powell River sailing, follow Anderton and Comox Road south toward Courtenay, then pick up Ryan Road and turn into Mission Road. It is about 7 km and twelve to fifteen minutes.
- From Nanaimo (Departure Bay or Duke Point): Take Highway 19 north for roughly 130 km, about an hour and a half, then leave at the Courtenay exit for Ryan Road and Mission Road. The Island Link bus runs the same corridor to Driftwood Mall if you are not driving.
