A Greystone on Top of Montréal's Transit Bullseye

You step out of the white door at 1701, under a vertical red and white HOTEL sign that has clearly been there a while, and you are one short block from Berri-UQAM. That is the busiest metro station in Montréal and the point where the Green, Orange and Yellow lines meet, which means the entire island is one ride away with at most a single change. The intercity bus terminal is four hundred metres further.

Hotel Victor is twelve rooms in a Saint-Hubert greystone, family-run, and it is classified one star. That classification is about facilities rather than standards: no restaurant, no lift, no pool. What you get instead is a private bathroom, air conditioning, a flat-screen, free Wi-Fi that guests rate highly, and a room that reviewers consistently describe as clean and fresh-smelling.

The lobby keeps free instant coffee and hot chocolate and a microwave you are welcome to use. The desk is staffed around the clock. And the staff, who guests describe as Cambodian Chinese ladies working in French and English, are the single most praised thing about the place.

The Staircase, and Everything Else Worth Knowing

Start with the stairs, because it is the thing guests wish they had known. The rooms are on upper floors and the only way up is a narrow staircase. There is no lift, the property confirms it plainly, and reviewers with suitcases mention the climb almost every time. If stairs are hard for you, ask at booking for the lowest floor available, and understand that it cannot be guaranteed.

Then the walls. Soundproofing is thin, and guests report hearing neighbours upstairs and traffic outside. One couple felt the springs in the mattress and suggested a topper. If you are a light sleeper, bring earplugs, which is fair advice at this price anywhere.

Practical matters: payment is Visa or Mastercard only, cash is not accepted, and a refundable damage deposit is taken by card at check-in and returned within a week after a room check. Check-in runs from two in the afternoon until ten at night, but guests report the desk will wait up for a late flight if you message ahead. There are no cots and no extra beds, so a family of four needs the two-double-bed room.

About the Streets Outside

We are going to be straight about this too, because the honest answer is more useful than a brochure one. The blocks around Berri-UQAM and Place Émilie-Gamelin are rough around the edges. There is visible homelessness and some drug activity, and the square can feel edgy after dark. That is the reality of the area around any big-city transit hub, and it is why the room is this cheap.

In practice, locals and regular visitors describe it as safe: it is busy with UQAM students and people passing through at almost all hours, which is exactly what makes a street safe rather than what makes it feel unsafe. Solo travellers, and particularly women, may still prefer to walk the busier Saint-Denis and Sainte-Catherine axes at night rather than cut across the square.

What you get in return is the Quartier Latin at your feet: lower Saint-Denis with its cafés, brewpubs, bookshops and theatres, the Village a few blocks south, and the whole Quartier des Spectacles festival ground fifteen minutes west on foot.

Why Book Hotel Victor?

Twelve small rooms in a greystone on rue Saint-Hubert, one block from the busiest metro station in Montréal. It is a one-star and it says so. What it does with that is better than most.

One block from three metro lines

Berri-UQAM is where the Green, Orange and Yellow lines meet, which means almost anywhere on the island is one ride away with at most one change. The intercity bus terminal is five minutes on foot, so Québec City and the Eastern Townships are easy day trips.

The staff are the reason people come back

The desk is staffed around the clock and rates higher with guests than the rooms do. One group left two hats behind and the team kept them for ten days until they passed back through Montréal. Another guest was met after a late flight because they had messaged ahead.

Clean, and rated that way

Cleanliness is one of the strongest things on the review card. Rooms are small and plainly furnished, but they come with a private bathroom, air conditioning, a flat-screen and fresh linen, and guests mention daily fresh towels and rooms that smell fresh.

No lift, and a narrow staircase

This is the fact to weigh first. Rooms are on upper floors reached by a narrow staircase and there is no lift. Guests carrying luggage up two floors say so in almost every review that mentions it. Pack light or ask for the lowest floor available.

  • The property holds Québec tourist-accommodation registration number 509445
  • Berri-UQAM is the interchange for the Green, Orange and Yellow metro lines and is one short block away
  • The Gare d'autocars, Montréal's intercity bus terminal, is about 400 metres away, which makes day trips to Québec City straightforward
  • The one-star classification describes facilities rather than cleanliness: guests rate the rooms as clean and the staff highly
  • Some listings claim a swimming pool at this address. There is none, and there is no restaurant, gym or lift either
  • The address is 1701 rue Saint-Hubert. Older pages, including our own until now, have written it as rue Hubert, which is wrong

Rooms & Accommodation at Hotel Victor

Double Room

One double bed, private bathroom

One double bed Private bathroom with bath or shower Air conditioning Flat-screen TV Hairdryer and free toiletries Telephone Iron and ironing facilities Free Wi-Fi Non-smoking

The standard room and the one most guests book: a double bed, a private bathroom, air conditioning, a flat-screen and free Wi-Fi. Small and plainly furnished, with the bed comfort rated reasonably well by guests. Best for a couple or a solo traveller who wants a clean, central base and will be out exploring, and worth pairing with a request for a low floor given the stairs.

Double Room with Two Double Beds

Two double beds, sleeps up to four

Two double beds Private bathroom with bath or shower Air conditioning Flat-screen TV Hairdryer and free toiletries Free Wi-Fi Non-smoking

Two double beds in one room, which is what booking sites are calling the quadruple. This matters more than it sounds, because the hotel has no cots and no extra beds at all, so four people need four actual bed spaces. Best for small families and groups of friends splitting a central Montréal base during festival season.

Double Room with Extra Bed

A double plus an additional bed

One double bed plus an extra bed Private bathroom with bath or shower Air conditioning Flat-screen TV Free Wi-Fi Non-smoking

A double bed with an additional bed already in the room, which is the option listing sites describe as the triple. Best for three travelling together, or for a couple with a child, since a cot is not an option here. The rooms are small, so expect the third bed to take up most of the remaining floor.

Room Selected at Check-In

The hotel picks the room

Room assigned on arrival Private bathroom with bath or shower Air conditioning Flat-screen TV Free Wi-Fi Non-smoking

You book a room and the hotel assigns whichever comparable one is free when you arrive, which is usually the cheapest way in. Best for flexible travellers who care about price more than specifics. If you want a low floor, and given the staircase you probably do, book a named room type instead and ask for one, because this option guarantees neither floor nor bed configuration.

Location and Getting Around

Hotel Victor stands on rue Saint-Hubert in the Ville-Marie borough, on the seam where the Quartier Latin meets the Village and the Quartier des Spectacles. One short block away is Berri-UQAM, the busiest metro station in Montréal and the interchange for the Green, Orange and Yellow lines, and beside it the Gare d'autocars, the intercity bus terminal.

That combination is the whole point. With three lines and at most one change you can reach almost anywhere on the island, and the bus terminal makes Québec City or the Eastern Townships a straightforward day trip. On foot you have the Grande Bibliothèque three minutes away, UQAM's campus around you, the Village's pedestrianised Sainte-Catherine strip a few blocks south and Parc La Fontaine sixteen minutes north.

Further out but still walkable: Place des Arts and the Quartier des Spectacles at fifteen minutes, Vieux-Montréal and the Notre-Dame Basilica at twenty, and the Old Port quays at twenty-five. Mount Royal is better reached by metro. From Montréal-Trudeau airport, the 747 Express runs 24 hours and its downtown terminus is about ten minutes' walk from the door.

  • Berri-UQAM metro, three lines: One short block, about a 2-minute walk
  • Grande Bibliothèque (BAnQ): About 250 m, a 3-minute walk
  • Gare d'autocars bus terminal: About 400 m, a 5-minute walk
  • Place des Arts and the Quartier des Spectacles: About 1.3 km, a 15-minute walk or two metro stops
  • Parc La Fontaine: About 1.3 km, a 16-minute walk north
  • Musée d'art contemporain: About 1.4 km, a 17-minute walk
  • Vieux-Montréal: About 1.6 km, a 20-minute walk south
  • Notre-Dame Basilica: About 1.6 km, a 20-minute walk
  • Montréal Science Centre and the Old Port: About 1.9 km, around a 25-minute walk
  • Mount Royal Park: About 3 km, best reached by metro

Grande Bibliothèque

3 min walk

A 3-minute walk from the door, Québec's national library fills a glass-slatted block beside the metro, with free exhibitions, a huge collection and one of the calmest public rooms in the city. In summer, second-hand book stalls set up along the pavement outside. It is free, it is warm in January, and almost no visitor thinks to go.

Quartier des Spectacles

15 min walk

A 15-minute walk west takes you to the district that hosts the Jazz Festival, Just for Laughs and the Francos, and that fills with light installations through the winter. Place des Arts sits at its centre and the Musée d'art contemporain beside it. In late June and July the whole thing is walkable from your door.

Notre-Dame Basilica

20 min walk

A 20-minute walk south, or a couple of metro stops, takes you into Vieux-Montréal and to the neo-Gothic basilica whose interior is the most startling thing in the city: a vaulted ceiling of deep blue and gold, lit like a night sky, above carved walnut and stained glass telling Montréal's own history rather than the usual scriptures.

How to Get to Hotel Victor

  1. From Montréal-Trudeau airport: Take the 747 Express bus from the arrivals-level stop. It runs 24 hours, the fare also gives you a full day on the metro and buses, and the journey takes forty-five to seventy minutes. Since early 2026 the downtown terminus has been at René-Lévesque and Berri, about a ten-minute walk from the hotel. A taxi is a regulated flat rate and takes twenty to forty-five minutes.
  2. From Gare Centrale: Walk to Bonaventure station and take the Orange Line to Berri-UQAM, a few stops, then leave by the Saint-Hubert exit and walk one block. On foot it is about twenty to twenty-five minutes east.
  3. From the bus terminal: The Gare d'autocars is next to Berri-UQAM, which makes this about a five-minute walk of four hundred metres. It is the easiest arrival of the lot.
  4. Getting around: Buy a 24-hour or three-day pass on an OPUS card or through the Chrono app when you arrive; single fares add up fast. Berri-UQAM's three lines mean at most one change to anywhere, and the Yellow Line runs out to Parc Jean-Drapeau for the Grand Prix and Osheaga.

Montréal from the Quartier Latin

The Quartier Latin is studenty, unpretentious and permanently busy. Lower Saint-Denis has the cafés, brewpubs, bookshops and theatres; UQAM's campus supplies the energy; the Grande Bibliothèque anchors it culturally. It is not manicured, and the blocks nearest the bus terminal are rough, but it is genuinely central and superb value for exploring on foot and by metro.

Summer is when this address earns its keep. The Jazz Festival runs from 25 June to 4 July 2026 in the Quartier des Spectacles, a walk west. Just for Laughs follows from 15 to 26 July, with part of its outdoor zone bordering rue Saint-Hubert itself. Osheaga takes over Parc Jean-Drapeau from 31 July to 2 August, one Yellow Line stop away, and the Canadian Grand Prix runs there on 22 to 24 May. Pride is a few blocks south in the Village in early August.

Close by: Le Cheval Blanc on rue Ontario Est, five to seven minutes' walk, was Montréal's first licensed brewpub in 1986 and still brews on site, open daily until three in the morning. Juliette et Chocolat on Saint-Denis is four to seven minutes away and is the answer to a cold evening.

Watch: Things to Do in Montréal

A run through the city you would be stepping into, most of it within one metro ride of Berri-UQAM, one block from the door.

Is Hotel Victor worth it?

Yes, if you travel light. You get a clean, small, air-conditioned room with its own bathroom one block from the three-line metro interchange and five minutes from the bus terminal, run by people guests write about warmly. You do not get a lift, thick walls, a restaurant or much floor space. Pack a bag you can carry up a narrow staircase, bring a credit card, and it is one of the best-value beds in central Montréal.

For a one-star, these reviews are unusually affectionate. Location and staff lead, and the staff comments are specific rather than generic: a group's forgotten hats kept for ten days, a receptionist bridging a language gap cheerfully, someone waiting up for a late flight. Cleanliness and value follow closely. The complaints repeat and are all structural: no lift and a narrow staircase, thin walls, small plain rooms, and photographs that flatter. Guests who arrived expecting a basic room in a brilliant location almost all left happy.

Good to Know Before You Book

No lift, and narrow stairs

Rooms are on upper floors reached only by a narrow staircase, and guests carrying luggage mention it consistently. Pack light, and if stairs are difficult ask at booking for the lowest floor available, understanding that it cannot be guaranteed.

Card only, plus a refundable deposit

Bring a credit card. Cash is not accepted, only Visa and Mastercard, and reception takes a refundable damage deposit by card at check-in which is returned within a week after a room check. Photo ID is required too.

Check-in closes at 22:00, so message ahead

The check-in window runs from 14:00 to 22:00 and check-out is by 11:00. Guests report that staff will wait up for a late flight if you tell them in advance, so send a message rather than hoping.

No on-site parking, and mind the winter signs

There is no parking at the hotel. Public garages on Saint-Hubert and Christin are a short walk. If you park on the street in winter, read the posted snow-removal signs carefully: Montréal tows, and it does not warn twice.

Cancellation terms depend on the rate

Cancellation and prepayment conditions vary by the rate you choose, and the exact terms show before you confirm. Check them against your dates, especially around the summer festivals when the whole city fills up.

Call Hotel Victor

Ring the desk to ask for a low floor, flag a late arrival so someone waits up, or check what breakfast arrangement comes with your rate. There is a toll-free line as well as the local number.
