Modern Apartments in the Heart of Keswick
Step outside the door and you are right in the middle of Keswick. The Saturday market sets up a minute up the street, the boat landings on Derwentwater are a few minutes the other way, and the northern fells fill the skyline in every direction. Keswick Lake Road Apartments puts you right in the centre of one of the Lake District's best-loved towns, on Lake Road between the Market Square and the lake, so the shops, the pubs, the Theatre by the Lake and the shore are all an easy walk from your door.
The apartments themselves are bright, contemporary and properly looked after, the kind of self-catering base where you drop the bags, put the kettle on and feel at home within minutes. What stands out is how quiet the bedrooms stay even when you are in the thick of the town. You can choose a spacious two-bedroom apartment that sleeps four, including a step-free ground-floor option with its own patio and private entrance, or a cosy one-bedroom apartment with the fells in the window. Keswick Lake Road Apartments works well for couples and walkers who want a modern, comfortable base right in the centre of town, with the lake and the fells on the doorstep.
Contemporary, Spotless and Set Up to Self-Cater
Inside, the look is calm and contemporary: pale walls, warm wood, soft grey seating and big windows that pull in the Lakeland light. Every apartment is fully self-catering, so you can cook a proper breakfast before a day on the fells, throw together a simple supper after one, or just keep the fridge stocked with finds from the Saturday market. The kitchens are ready for real cooking rather than the odd reheated meal, and the bathrooms are modern and immaculate, which guests confirm in review after review.
There is a layout to suit most ways of doing Keswick. Couples tend to take the one-bedroom Apartment with Mountain View for the fell outlook and the lower rate, while families and friends spread out in one of the two-bedroom apartments that sleep four. If steps are a problem, the ground-floor apartment is the one to book: it sits on a single level, with its own patio and a private entrance off the street.
Central, but Quiet When the Door Closes
What makes the location special is that it stays calm. You are a couple of minutes from the Market Square in one direction and the Derwentwater jetties in the other, yet guests routinely describe the apartments as a peaceful retreat once the front door closes. Check-in is simple and self-guided, so you can arrive on your own schedule after a long drive north or a full day on the hills.
Two practical things to sort when you book. There is no private car park, but the council-run Central Car Park sits about a minute's walk behind the building, with electric-vehicle charging and a low overnight rate, and the apartments can arrange a single parking permit for one car. These are adults-only apartments with a minimum check-in age of 21, fully self-catering, so plan to enjoy Keswick's many pubs and restaurants or cook in. For walkers, that central position is gold: you can be on the Catbells ridge or boarding a Derwentwater launch within the hour.

Interesting Points About Keswick Lake Road Apartments
- The building has carried three names in five years: it traded as Sweeney's Bar Restaurant & Rooms until 2019, became 18/20 Cellar Bar, Dining & Rooms, then reopened in 2023 as six self-catering apartments. The former cellar bar and restaurant closed for good in 2020, which is why the apartments are now fully self-catering and serve no food or drink on site.
- The apartments are run by the family-owned Lake District Inns group and marketed as six individually named units after the surrounding fells: Latrigg, Blencathra, Helvellyn, Skiddaw, Castlerigg and Cat'bells, with some bookable together for larger groups.
- There is no private car park, but the council Central Car Park (CA12 5DP) is about a one-minute walk behind the building, with EV charging and a published parking fare of around £11.40 for up to 12 hours and £1.10 overnight; the apartments also offer a single number-plate parking permit valid from 4pm on arrival to 10am on departure.
- These are adults-only apartments: children are not accommodated, the minimum check-in age is 21, and payment is by bankcard with no cash accepted on arrival.

Location & Getting Around
Keswick Lake Road Apartments sit on Lake Road, the short street that runs from the Market Square down towards the shore of Derwentwater, which puts you about as central as it gets in this part of the northern Lake District. Keswick is a compact, walkable market town in Cumbria, wrapped by the Skiddaw and Derwent fells and built around the lake, and it has long been the natural base for walkers, families and couples exploring Borrowdale, Catbells and the high northern tops. From the front door you can reach the shops, the pubs, the outdoor-gear stores and the twice-weekly market on foot in a couple of minutes.
Down at the water, the Keswick Launch runs a roughly 50-minute round-the-lake service with eight jetties, so you can step off at Hawse End for the classic Catbells walk and ride back, or just potter between landing stages for the afternoon. On a wet day the Pencil Museum, the Keswick Museum, the Theatre by the Lake and the century-old Alhambra cinema are all close by. Getting here, Keswick has no railway station of its own: the nearest railhead is Penrith on the West Coast Main Line, about 40 to 45 minutes away by the regular Stagecoach bus, which drops you at Keswick bus station a five-minute walk from the apartments. Drivers should head for the council Central Car Park a minute behind the building, as there is no parking on site.
- Derwentwater: A few minutes' walk. One of the loveliest lakes in England, with shoreline paths from Friar's Crag and a launch service calling at eight jetties around the water.
- Keswick Market & Moot Hall: A couple of minutes' walk. A 700-year-old market trading every Thursday and Saturday around the Grade II*-listed Moot Hall with its single-handed clock.
- Theatre by the Lake: About a 7-minute walk. A year-round producing theatre on the shore of Derwentwater, opened by Dame Judi Dench in 1999.
- Derwent Pencil Museum: Under a 10-minute walk. Home of the first pencil and the world's longest pencil, a reliable rainy-day stop.
- Keswick Museum & Art Gallery: Under a 10-minute walk. Local history and the famous Musical Stones of Skiddaw, a playable rock xylophone.
- Catbells: About 3 miles. The classic 'mini-mountain' ridge above Derwentwater, usually reached by launch to the Hawse End jetty.
- Whinlatter Forest Park: About 5 miles. England's only true mountain forest, with walking and mountain-bike trails and a Go Ape course.
- Keswick Bus Station: A 5-minute walk. Stagecoach services to Penrith for mainline trains, plus the 555 down the central Lakes to Windermere and Kendal.
Getting to Key Locations
Derwentwater
The lake on the apartments' doorstep, a few minutes' walk down Lake Road. Shoreline paths start at Friar's Crag, and the Keswick Launch loops the water with eight landing stages, so you can combine a boat trip with a fell walk such as Catbells. It is the prettiest reason to stay this central, and the reason most guests come.

Keswick Market & Moot Hall
A market has traded here for more than 700 years, and it still fills the main street every Thursday and Saturday with around 70 stalls of local food, crafts and outdoor gear. It runs right past the apartments, around the Grade II*-listed Moot Hall with its unusual one-handed clock. Time a stay around it and you can stock the kitchen straight from the stalls.

Catbells
The best-loved 'first fell' in the area, a shapely ridge above the western shore of Derwentwater about three miles from the apartments. The usual approach is a short launch ride to the Hawse End jetty, then a steady climb with big views back over the lake and town. It is manageable in a morning and the classic introduction to Lakeland walking.

- By train to Penrith, then bus: Keswick has no station, so take a West Coast Main Line train to Penrith, then the regular Stagecoach bus to Keswick bus station, about 40 to 45 minutes. The apartments are a five-minute walk along Station Road and into the town centre.
- By car: Leave the M6 at junction 40 (Penrith) and follow the A66 west for about 30 minutes to Keswick. There is no parking on site, so head for the council Central Car Park behind the building, which has EV charging and an overnight rate.
- By bus within the Lakes: The 555 runs up the central Lakes from Windermere, Ambleside and Grasmere to Keswick, and the 77/77A Honister Rambler loops round Borrowdale and Buttermere in season, all calling at Keswick bus station a few minutes' walk away.
Keswick & the Northern Lakes
Keswick is the adventure capital of the northern Lake District: a compact Cumbrian market town on the shore of Derwentwater, ringed by Skiddaw, Blencathra and the Borrowdale fells. It is walkable, friendly and geared up for the outdoors, with more boot shops than you can count, a 700-year-old market, and launches criss-crossing the lake all day. Stay central, as you are here, and you can leave the car behind for most of a trip.
Beyond the town, the northern Lakes open up fast: Borrowdale and Honister, the quiet beauty of Buttermere, Whinlatter's mountain-bike trails, and the stone circle at Castlerigg with its ring of fells. The walking season runs spring to autumn, the Mountain Festival lands in May, and even the wetter winter months have their own draw, with low cloud on the tops and a fire in a town pub afterwards.
A Walk Through Keswick Market
A stroll through Keswick's historic 700-year-old outdoor market and the surrounding Lake District town, a couple of minutes from the apartments' front door.
What Guests Say About Keswick Lake Road Apartments
Scores and review counts are aggregated from verified guest bookings on major travel platforms.
Superb
Guests love the central location most of all, along with how clean, modern and comfortable the apartments are and how quiet the bedrooms stay despite the town-centre setting. Couples make up much of the review pool, and returning visitors are common. The few notes for improvement are small touches such as a blackout blind or a welcome tea and coffee, which rarely dent an otherwise excellent stay.
The apartment was really clean and the location was ideal, right in the middle of everything. Nothing at all we would change.

Fully self-catering
There is no breakfast, restaurant or bar on site, so the apartments are entirely self-catering. The kitchens are well equipped, and you are a couple of minutes from Keswick's pubs, cafés and the twice-weekly market if you would rather eat out or shop for supplies.
Adults only, card payment
These are adults-only apartments with a minimum check-in age of 21, and children cannot be accommodated. Payment is by bankcard rather than cash, and quiet hours apply overnight, which is part of why the bedrooms stay so peaceful.
Choose your floor for access
