Liverpool at Christmas runs from Friday 6 November 2026, when Liverpool ONE's lights and its new walk-through tree go on, to Sunday 3 January 2027, the last day of the new market and rink on St George's Plateau (open from 21 November). Boxing Day football is Everton at home to Sunderland; Liverpool are away at Hull. For the market, stay at the Lime Street and St George's end of the centre.

Key Takeaways
  • The Christmas market has a new operator and new dates for 2026: Underbelly's market, rink, rooftop bar and Big Wheel on St George's Plateau run daily from 21 November to 3 January 2027. When we checked in September, the council's own market page still showed last year's dates and Google's answer panel gave 18 November to 24 December; neither is right for 2026.
  • Liverpool ONE's lights start first, from Friday 6 November, with a 30-metre walk-through tree at Paradise Place. The city centre switch-on date had not been announced by mid-September.
  • No trains run on Christmas Day. On Boxing Day, Everton play Sunderland at 3pm at the Hill Dickinson Stadium and Aintree races from noon, but Merseyrail had not published its 2026 Boxing Day timetable when we checked.
  • Stay at the Lime Street end for the market (Liverpool Stays is about 7 minutes' walk from the Plateau), the Cavern Quarter for nights out, and book Anfield only for Liverpool v Coventry on 2 January.

What's on in Liverpool over Christmas 2026?

The season starts on Friday 6 November at Liverpool ONE and ends on Sunday 3 January 2027 on St George's Plateau, and the busiest single day in between is Boxing Day, when football and racing land together. We'll refresh the dates below as each organiser publishes them. When we checked on 14 September, the city centre lights switch-on, the Pier Head dates and the market's daily hours were still to come.

Two things trip people up. The first is that the market has changed hands for 2026, so any page quoting a mid-November opening and a Christmas Eve close is describing last year. The second is that River of Light runs from 23 October to 1 November this year. It is an autumn event, and it will be over before the first bauble goes up on the Plateau.

Does Liverpool have a Christmas market, and when is it on?

Yes, and the 2026 market is on St George's Plateau daily from Saturday 21 November to Sunday 3 January 2027, run by Underbelly under the name Skate St George's. It brings together an outdoor rink, a rooftop bar, local traders and a Big Wheel in front of St George's Hall, which is about 7 minutes' walk from Lime Street station.

This is a different market from the one Liverpool had for years. After a council tender in the summer, the 2026 contracts went to Underbelly for St George's and to Icebox Live for a second site, Liverpool Christmas Wonderland at Pier Head, with a covered rink, rides, games and experiences. Pop-up markets are also planned for Basnett Street and the Cunard Building on selected dates. The Pier Head dates and hours, and the pop-up dates, had not been published when we checked.

One kind word of warning about what Google shows you. When we searched in September, the council's own Christmas Market page still carried last year's copy, naming the old operator and the old 15 November to 24 December run, and Google's answer panel for the 2026 market was quoting 18 November to 24 December. Neither matches what the organisers have published for 2026. The St George's Hall Christmas page is the one to trust for the Plateau, and the Liverpool ONE Christmas page for the tree and parades.

Walking round is free. The rink, the rides and the Big Wheel are ticketed, and the organisers had not published the daily opening and closing times by mid-September, so plan an afternoon rather than a specific hour until they do.

Where are the Christmas lights in Liverpool?

The lights you can already put a date on are at Liverpool ONE, from Friday 6 November: a new 30-metre walk-through Christmas tree at Paradise Place, a light canopy over Peter's Lane and Keys Court, and a light curtain around Church Street. The city centre scheme, which Liverpool BID Company says it mostly funds, is confirmed for 2026 but had no switch-on date announced when we checked.

Liverpool ONE is also where most of the dated family events are. The Christmas Toy Parade is on Saturday 14 November, Wishmas is on Saturday 5 December, and Festive Thursdays run through December. Stone's Throw Social at Chavasse Park, with ice-free curling, karaoke huts and shuffleboard, opens on 3 October and stays open until Monday 4 January, a day longer than the Plateau.

The three festive zones are close enough to do in one evening on foot. From St George's Hall it's about 13 minutes to Paradise Place and about 17 minutes down to Pier Head, so the natural loop is Plateau, then Liverpool ONE, then the waterfront, then back up for the rink. Liverpool Cathedral's Noel, a light and sound installation by Luxmuralis, is the one to add if you're here on one of its listed dates in late November and early December.

Which part of Liverpool should you stay in at Christmas?

Stay at the Lime Street and St George's end if the market is the point of the trip, the Cavern Quarter if the nights out are, and Ropewalks if you want to be nearest Liverpool ONE and don't mind the bar crowds. The noise trade-off is real on December Fridays and Saturdays around Mathew Street, Concert Square and Bold Street, so pick the end that matches how late you plan to be up. For the wider area picture, see our Liverpool guide.

For the market, book Liverpool Stays. It's on Marquis Street off London Road, about 7 minutes' walk to the Plateau and 8 to Lime Street station, with economy double rooms, a shared kitchen and lounge, and shared bathrooms. There's no reception: you email your ID in advance and let yourself in with a door code between 3pm and 9pm, after which the code gives you round-the-clock access. The weekend the market opens, 21 November, is the first one to book early for.

If there are three of you, or you'd rather cook than queue for Christmas dinner, 8 Stanley Street Apart-Hotel is the better choice. The studios have their own kitchen and dining table, there's a Standard Triple Studio for three guests, and check-in runs from 3pm to 11.30pm. It sits between Dale Street and Mathew Street in the Cavern Quarter, about 10 minutes' walk from the Plateau and 10 from Pier Head, which puts both rinks within reach. There's no private car park; Q-Park Dale Street is the nearest public one.

The Podworks Hotel on Henry Street is the Ropewalks option, about 4 minutes' walk from Liverpool ONE's tree and 15 from Pier Head. It's adults only (minimum age 21), with 19 soundproofed pods, a 24-hour reception and check-in from 4pm to midnight. Every pod is windowless by design, which some people find restful and others can't stand, so decide before you book rather than after. There's no parking of any kind; Duke Street car park is the nearest.

Parking

None of our three central Liverpool properties has its own car park, and Liverpool ONE's car parks are the only ones we found advertised as open 24 hours. If you're driving in for the market, St George's Hall points visitors to the Lime Street station car park, Q-Park Dale Street suits 8 Stanley Street, and Duke Street suits The Podworks. No operator had published Christmas Day or Boxing Day parking hours when we checked.

What can you do in Liverpool on Christmas Day?

Walk, mostly. National Rail confirms there are no trains on its network on Christmas Day 2026, and Merseyrail's last published Christmas timetable, the 2025 edition, had none either, so whatever you do on 25 December starts from your front door. The good news is that the Plateau is about 13 minutes' walk from Liverpool ONE and about 17 from Pier Head, so the whole festive centre is walkable.

What will actually be open is the part nobody can tell you yet. The Plateau is advertised as open daily through the whole season, which includes Christmas Day, but no 25 December hours had been published when we checked. Liverpool Cathedral had listed its Christmas Eve carol service (2pm, BSL-interpreted) but not its Christmas Day times, and the Metropolitan Cathedral gives normal hours of 7.30am to 6pm with no Christmas Day notice yet. The Cavern Club had no 2026 Christmas Day notice out either; it was closed on 25 December in 2024.

The museums are a genuine gap. National Museums Liverpool had not published a Christmas-week opening table, and the Maritime Museum and the International Slavery Museum are closed for redevelopment until 2028 regardless. Tate Liverpool is at Mann Island for now while its Albert Dock building is rebuilt. For the national picture on hotel Christmas dinners, shops and what a hotel will and won't do on the day, our guide to what is open on Christmas Day covers it.

Heads Up

Don't plan a Christmas Day around the Pier Head rink or a Bold Street lunch until each one has published its 25 December hours. The Pier Head organiser had not announced any dates at all by mid-September, and no reliable list of restaurants open on Christmas Day existed yet. Book the meal with your hotel or a restaurant that has its Christmas Day page live, and treat everything else as a bonus.

What's on in Liverpool on Boxing Day?

Football first: Everton are at home to Sunderland at 3pm at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday 26 December, and Liverpool are away at Hull at 5.30pm, a game picked for television. There is no match at Anfield on Boxing Day. Aintree races the same day, with gates at 10.30am, the first race at noon and the last at 3.25pm, timings the racecourse says may change.

Getting to either is the catch. National Rail says most operators run nothing on Boxing Day and that the detailed 2026 arrangements were still being completed in September. Merseyrail did better than that in the 2025 edition of its Christmas timetable, which ran a special Boxing Day service and extra Liverpool to Aintree trains for the races, but its 2026 timetable had not been published when we checked, so we're not printing last year's times as this year's.

On a normal day, Merseyrail runs between Liverpool Central and Aintree every 15 minutes and the station is across the road from the racecourse, a few minutes on foot by the racecourse's own reckoning. For the Hill Dickinson Stadium it's the Northern line to Sandhills and then about a 15-minute walk along Regent Road. Whether either runs on 26 December is exactly what the missing timetable will tell you. If you're coming for the racing, our guide to staying near Aintree for the Grand National explains how race-day trains and the walk from the station work.

Local Tip

The Cavern Pub has live music listed from 3pm on Boxing Day 2026, so a room in the Cavern Quarter gives you somewhere to watch the Hull game and hear a band without needing a train. And because there's no match at Anfield on the 26th, the match-day squeeze up there is a week later, on 2 January.

The rest of the festive fixtures: Everton v Manchester City on Tuesday 29 December at 8.15pm at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, Liverpool away at Aston Villa on Wednesday 30 December at 8.15pm, and Liverpool v Coventry City at Anfield on Saturday 2 January at 3pm.

Where to stay for Liverpool v Coventry on 2 January

Anfield's busy weekend is the New Year one, not Christmas, and it is a 39-minute walk from St George's Plateau, so it's the wrong end for the market and the right end for the game. Three of our properties are within 7 minutes of the ground.

Closest is Dinorwic Lodge on Dinorwic Road, about 4 minutes from the Kop, with a kitchen in every room, a family room that sleeps four and self check-in by key. Anfield House at 302 Anfield Road is a five-bedroom terrace about 5 minutes away with self check-in from 3pm and a shared kitchen and lounge, which suits a group travelling up together. For solo fans on a budget, Brownlows Inn Guest House, still known locally as The King Harry, has mixed dorms and a budget twin about 7 minutes from the ground, with key-code entry and a sports bar downstairs. It takes cash at the property, so bring some.

Leave the car. Walton Breck Road is being rebuilt until March 2027 and Liverpool FC's match-day closures now run from two hours before kick-off until one hour after the final whistle, so on 2 January that's roughly 1pm to about 6pm. On a normal Saturday the 26/27 Sheil Road Circular loops from Liverpool ONE Bus Station along Walton Breck Road in 15 to 20 minutes; the holiday-period bus timetable for that date had not been published in September.

Common questions

When is Liverpool Christmas Market 2026?

The St George's Plateau market opens on Saturday 21 November 2026 and runs daily until Sunday 3 January 2027, with a rink, rooftop bar, traders and a Big Wheel. Daily opening hours had not been published when we checked in September. The second site, at Pier Head, had no dates announced yet.

Is the Liverpool Christmas market free to walk round?

Yes. Walking round the stalls on the Plateau costs nothing. The rink, the Big Wheel and the rides are ticketed, and the pop-up markets on Basnett Street and at the Cunard Building are free to browse when their dates are announced.

Are trains running in Liverpool on Boxing Day?

Not on most of the National Rail network, and Merseyrail's 2026 Boxing Day timetable had not been published when we checked. In the 2025 edition Merseyrail ran a special Boxing Day service with extra trains to Aintree for the races, so check its Christmas page in December before you rely on a train to the match or the racecourse.

Where can you park for the Liverpool Christmas market?

St George's Hall's own visitor page points to Lime Street Station's long-stay car park and to the car parks around Dale Street, Hunter Street and Fontenoy Street. Paid on-street parking in the city now runs from 7am to 11pm. Liverpool ONE's three car parks are open 24 hours; Q-Park Liverpool ONE is under Chavasse Park with access from The Strand.

Is the Maritime Museum open over Christmas?

No. The Maritime Museum and the International Slavery Museum are closed for redevelopment and due to reopen in 2028. Tate Liverpool is showing at Mann Island in the meantime. National Museums Liverpool had not published a Christmas-week opening table for its other sites, such as the Walker Art Gallery and World Museum, when we checked.

Is Liverpool worth visiting at Christmas?

Yes, and 2026 is the year to do it, because the market has a new operator and a new format, with a rink on the Plateau and a second one at Pier Head, and Liverpool ONE has a tree you walk through. Go between 21 November and Christmas Eve for the full market and lights, or on Boxing Day if you want football and racing on the same afternoon.
