About 900 yards away, a 10-minute walk, Union Terrace Gardens is the sunken Victorian park that gives the middle of Aberdeen a green floor. It reopened in December 2022 after a £28.3 million rebuild that added cafés, a play area, toilets and step-free routes down from Union Street, and the granite viaduct arches along one side are the best bit. In February it becomes one of the main venues for the Spectra light festival.

Aberdeen Art Gallery
15 min walk
Just under a kilometre away, a 12 to 15-minute walk uphill, Aberdeen Art Gallery is the city's best wet-afternoon answer and it costs nothing to get in. A long refurbishment added a copper-clad rooftop floor and a memorial hall to the original granite building on Schoolhill, and the collection runs from eighteenth-century portraits to strong contemporary Scottish work. The café at the top is a good place to sit out a shower.

Duthie Park and the Winter Gardens
20 min walk
About a mile south, a 20-minute walk along the Dee or a few minutes on a southbound bus, Duthie Park is the big riverside park and the David Welch Winter Gardens inside it are one of the largest indoor gardens in Europe. Under the glass you move from cacti to tropical planting in a few minutes, which makes it the reliable choice on an Aberdeen day that cannot decide. Entry is free and there is a decent café by the entrance.

- Leave the station towards Guild Street: Come out of Aberdeen railway station through Union Square and turn onto Guild Street. The bus station is part of the same interchange, so the route is identical if you arrive by coach.

Aberdeen Beyond the Granite
Aberdeen rewards visitors who look past the grey. Two free museums, the Art Gallery and the Maritime Museum, anchor a compact centre you can cross on foot; the restored Union Terrace Gardens gives the middle of the city a green floor; and within a short bus ride you reach two miles of beach, the colour-washed cottages of Footdee at the harbour mouth, and the Winter Gardens glasshouses in Duthie Park. Head an hour west and you are on Royal Deeside among the castles and distilleries.
Time a visit around the calendar if you can. Spectra, Scotland's festival of light, runs from Thursday 5 to Sunday 8 February 2026, free and open from 5.30pm to 10pm each night, and it lights up Union Terrace Gardens ten minutes from the door. Nuart Aberdeen brings street art in the spring, and the Christmas Village fills the centre through November and December. The week to avoid unless you have booked far ahead is the biennial offshore energy conference at P&J Live, next running from 7 to 9 September 2027, when the whole city fills up.

Neil is named personally in review after review, for keeping in touch before arrival, for moving guests up to a better room when one was free, and for the little landing kitchen with its fresh milk and cereal that turns a room-only rate into something warmer. Cleanliness and the central position come next, with guests repeatedly surprised by how smart the inside is against a plain granite frontage. The one recurring caveat is the one an older townhouse always carries: you can hear movement between rooms and to and from the shared facilities, which is easily solved by choosing one of the two private-bathroom rooms.
