The house sits on Staines Road in North Feltham, in the London Borough of Hounslow, about a mile and a half short of Heathrow's perimeter. You will see the address written as Cranford in places, because that is how the listing sites file it, but the postcode is Feltham's: TW14 0JS sits in the Feltham North ward, and the company that runs the house gives Feltham as its registered address. Cranford is the next locality north, across the A312. This is not a sightseeing quarter and we are not going to claim otherwise. Bedfont Lakes Country Park

Two miles south-west, six minutes by car, Bedfont Lakes is seventy-two hectares of lakes, meadow and woodland laid out over former gravel workings. It has been a nature reserve since 2000 and is a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation, which in plain terms means birdlife, waymarked paths and a genuine sense of being out of London while planes climb overhead. If you have a spare morning before a late flight, this is the best use of it within a few miles of the house.

Freddie Mercury's blue plaque, Gladstone Avenue
8 min walk
Six hundred metres from the front door, an eight-minute walk through the same residential streets, an English Heritage blue plaque marks 22 Gladstone Avenue. The Bulsara family moved into the terrace in November 1964, and Farrokh, who the world would come to know as Freddie Mercury, lived there on and off until about 1970. Brian May unveiled the plaque in 2016. It is a private house on an ordinary residential road, so look from the pavement and leave the residents in peace. It is also the single most surprising thing within walking distance of this front door.

Heathrow Central Bus Station

Four and a half miles west by road, eighteen minutes by bus on route 285 from the end of Staines Road, Heathrow Central is the interchange for Terminals 2 and 3, for National Express coaches and for the local bus network. The 285 runs there twenty-four hours a day, roughly every half hour through the night, so a 6am check-in desk is genuinely reachable without a taxi. Terminals 4 and 5 are served directly by the 490 from the same stop, twelve and twenty-five minutes respectively, though that route pauses between about half past one and half past three in the morning.

Hampton Court Palace

Five miles south, eighteen minutes by car or a train from Feltham with one change, Hampton Court Palace is the serious day out from this address. Henry VIII's Tudor palace and the Baroque wing that Wren added later share one site, with the gardens, the maze and the Thames alongside. Historic Royal Palaces runs it and charges admission. Twickenham's Allianz Stadium, the eighty-two thousand seat home of England rugby, is closer still at eleven minutes by car if a fixture happens to line up with your dates.

Feltham town centre
20 min walk
A mile south, three minutes on the 490 from the stop opposite or a twenty-minute walk, Feltham town centre is where you go for anything the parade at the end of the road cannot supply. The Centre is a managed shopping centre with sixty-odd stores, a library and a health hub, and Leisure West on Air Park Way adds a Cineworld multiplex and a Tenpin bowling alley. It is a functional suburban high street rather than a destination, rebuilt in the 2000s after most of the old one was demolished. For a wet evening between flights it does the job.
