Pull back the heavy front door of number 125 and the view goes straight over the railings, across one road, and out into Weymouth Bay. There is no path down to the beach because there is nothing between you and it: the promenade wall, the sand, the shallow water that made this town famous. A family who stayed in October swam in the sea beside the property before breakfast. This is what you are booking.
Inside, the Norfolk is a proper old-fashioned seaside hotel rather than a boutique conversion. Sue and Nick have had it for about twenty-five years and their names come up constantly in what guests write, for checking people in themselves, carrying cases out to the car, and handing over the parking permit that makes driving to Weymouth make sense. Reception is not a desk somebody staffs all day. It is two owners who run the building.
One of the Sixteen Houses of Belvidere
The building is part of Belvidere, a Grade II listed terrace of sixteen Georgian and Regency houses begun in 1818 and not finished until 1855, listed by Historic England under entry 1365868 and logged by Dorset Council as a heritage asset. Number 125 is the pale blue one with the gabled Victorian dormer in the roof, the cast-iron balcony running across the first floor, and the arched sash windows at street level under a row of hanging baskets.
That age is the reason for both the good and the awkward. The good is the ceiling height, the full-height front windows and the balcony. The awkward is the stairs. There are entrance steps up from the pavement, the hallways are narrow, and the lift only reaches the second floor, so the family rooms tucked into the original loft need one more flight. If any of that matters to you, say so when you book and ask for a lower floor.
Breakfast, the Bar and the Rooms Themselves
Breakfast is ordered the evening before by ticking a form: what you want and what time you want it. There is a visitor centre, boardwalk paths through the reeds and marsh harriers overhead in summer. Bring the binoculars if you have them and go early.

About three-quarters of a mile south along the front, a 15 to 18 minute walk, Weymouth Harbour is the seventeenth-century quayside where the working half of the town still happens. Fishing boats unload beside seafood restaurants, charter skippers take bookings for Jurassic Coast trips, and the lifting Town Bridge stops the traffic several times a day. It is the obvious evening walk from the Esplanade.
