Once you have the car out, two of California's quietest public-land headlines are inside a 10-minute drive. MacKerricher State Park is about 3 miles north: 9 miles of coastal headlands, tide pools, the long Haul Road walking and cycling trail along an old logging grade, and a long-standing harbour-seal pupping site at Laguna Point. The 47-acre Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens is about 3 miles south, one of very few US public gardens with an ocean view, with rhododendron beds, dahlia displays, heritage roses and a clifftop trail down to the Pacific. Fort Bragg is California's wild, foggy alternative to Big Sur: fewer crowds, lower prices, and a landscape that swings between sea cliffs, redwood groves, river estuaries and headlands carpeted with wildflowers. The first Saturday in July is the World's Largest Salmon BBQ at Noyo Harbor, and Labor Day weekend brings the long-running Paul Bunyan Days parade and logging show, a tradition since 1939 and one of the most distinctive small-town festivals in Northern California. September also brings Winesong at the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, one of California's premier charity wine tastings.
