The sea is the first thing you see and about three minutes from your door. Pelagia Beach Studios sits on the slope at the northern end of Agia Pelagia, high enough that the balconies on the seaward side look clean over the bay, close enough that the grey-sand main beach and the line of tavernas along the front are a short walk downhill.
The family built the place in 1994 and have run it since, refreshing it in 2015. Ten studios, whitewashed walls, cobalt shutters, blue timber pergolas and bougainvillea over the terrace. Guests return for the same three things every time: how clean it is, the views, and Christos.
A Real Kitchen, Not a Kettle on a Shelf
Every studio here is fitted to cook a proper meal in, not just reheat one. There is a real dining table to eat at rather than a perch on the end of the bed, and enough kitchenware that you are not improvising with one pan. The Island Almost Nobody Has Ruined
Kythira sits alone between the Peloponnese and Crete, and it has stayed the way other Greek islands were forty years ago: gorges, a waterfall, Venetian castles, dozens of beaches and no crowds. Agia Pelagia is its most practical base, the village with the most life and the easiest walk to sand.
You will want a car. There is no reliable bus network, the roads wind, and the best of the island is spread out. With one, everything from the Mylopotamos waterfall to the castle at Chora is a day trip and you come back to a balcony over the water.

Location and Getting Around
Agia Pelagia is the largest and liveliest of Kythira's resort villages, on the north-east coast about 26 km from the capital at Chora. It has a long grey-sand beach, a seafront row of tavernas and cafes, a supermarket and small shops, and it keeps an unhurried feel that the bigger Greek islands lost decades ago.
The studios sit on the hillside at the northern end, so the walk down to the sand takes a couple of minutes and the walk back is the only exercise you will get. For everything beyond the village, plan on driving.

Chora and the Venetian Castle
40 min drive
About 26 kilometres south, roughly a 35 to 40-minute drive, Chora is Kythira's capital, a white village of stepped lanes crowned by a Venetian castle begun in 1503. From the walls you look down over Kapsali's twin bays, and it is the island's best sunset.

- From Kythira airport: The airport is about 16 km away, roughly 25 minutes. Take the main island road north and follow signs for Potamos and Agia Pelagia. The studios are on the hillside at the north end of the village.
- From Diakofti ferry port: About 27 km, 25 to 30 minutes. Follow the port road to the main highway and head north past the airport junction towards Agia Pelagia. Ferries no longer call at Agia Pelagia itself.

Kythira for First-Time Visitors
