Cross the road and you are on the sand
Step out of the lobby, wait for a gap in the traffic on Avenida Boulevard, and you are at the public beach access. That is the whole proposition of Residence Meridiana, and it is the thing the listing sites cannot agree on: you will find fifty metres, two hundred yards, three hundred and fifty yards and 1.8 miles quoted for the same walk. The long figure is the distance to Juan Dolio town. The sand is about a minute away.
Behind that road sits a three-star aparthotel of around fifty apartments at the Villas Del Mar end of the strip, the quieter, newer half of Juan Dolio. Studios take two; the one and two-bedroom apartments take up to four. Each has a kitchenette with a fridge, a hob, kitchenware and a dining table, a private bathroom with a shower, air conditioning, a ceiling fan, a flat-screen television and a balcony. A good number look out over the sea, the garden or the pools.
The grounds are better than the buildings: two outdoor pools including one for children, a hot tub, a rooftop sun terrace over the coast, and a garden of palms and thatched parasols. There is a restaurant-bar on site doing Dominican food, international plates and pizza, with a breakfast guests rate highly.
What you need to accept
This is a well-liked property, not a polished one, and the complaints in the reviews are consistent enough to plan around. The apartments are dated: tiled floors, older furniture, bathrooms that work but have not been touched in years. The lifts are frequently reported out of service, sometimes both of them, which matters if you are on an upper floor with luggage. Parking is free but amounts to three or four spaces, so arriving late in a hire car is a gamble.

They are different businesses with different owners and different addresses. This one is on Avenida Boulevard in Villas Del Mar, postcode 21004, with the beach access opposite, and its own site is meridianaresidence.com. The property's own logo styles the name Meridiana Residence, which is where half the confusion starts.
One more thing worth clearing up: the on-site restaurant appears as Restaurante Esperanza on the reservation listing and as Bella Venezia on the property's own material, where the pizza operation carries the second name. It is one venue, not two, and it serves Dominican, international and Italian food.

An apartment with a kitchenette
Studios sleep two and the one and two-bedroom apartments sleep up to four, each with a fridge, a hob, kitchenware, a dining table, a private bathroom and a balcony. For a week on the coast that is worth more than a hotel room, and guests who cook say so repeatedly.
Two pools and a rooftop terrace
There is a main pool and a children's pool set in a garden of palms and thatched parasols, plus a hot tub and a rooftop sun terrace that looks out over the coast. The on-site restaurant-bar does Dominican plates, international dishes and pizza, and the breakfast scores well.
Dated, cash only, and the Wi-Fi is poor
The apartments show their age, the lifts are often out of service, parking amounts to three or four spaces, and the Wi-Fi barely reaches past the lobby. Payment is cash at the property. Guests forgive all of it for the position and the price, but only because they knew first.

Location and getting around
Juan Dolio is a ten-kilometre ribbon of white sand in San Pedro de Macorís province, about fifty kilometres east of Santo Domingo and half an hour from Las Américas airport. It grew as a resort town in the 1980s and now runs quieter and cheaper than Punta Cana, filling with Dominican families at weekends and going peaceful again on Monday.
Residence Meridiana sits at the Villas Del Mar end, the eastern, newer half sometimes called New Juan Dolio, where the buildings are condos rather than resorts and the beaches are calmer. The public beach access is directly across Avenida Boulevard. Playa Real, a quieter cove, is about eleven minutes on foot.
Two full eighteen-hole courses are within ten minutes by car: Los Marlins at the Metro Country Club, a Charles Ankrom design from 1995, and Guavaberry, a Gary Player course from 2002. Playa Guayacanes and its seafood paradores are ten minutes west, Los Delfines water park about fifteen, and the Cueva de las Maravillas half an hour east. Santo Domingo's Colonial Zone is an hour west by road or guagua.

A 30-minute drive east, the Cueva de las Maravillas runs about eight hundred metres, twenty-five metres underground, and holds roughly five hundred Taíno pictographs and petroglyphs. It was declared a national park in July 1997 and has been open to visitors since 2003.

Santo Domingo's Colonial Zone
60 min drive
A 60-minute drive west, or the same on a guagua from the Boulevard, Santo Domingo's Ciudad Colonial is the oldest European-built city in the Americas and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1990. Cobbled streets, a sixteenth-century cathedral and the Alcázar de Colón make it the obvious day trip.

Take the Autovía del Este east, come off at the Juan Dolio and Guayacanes exit onto the Boulevard, and the property is on Avenida Boulevard at Villas Del Mar with the beach access opposite. Juan Dolio and the south coast
Juan Dolio gives you the Caribbean at a fraction of Punta Cana's price and none of its scale: ten kilometres of white sand, calm swimmable water, and a strip of colmados, beach bars and restaurants you can walk. It is an hour from Santo Domingo's colonial history and half an hour from the airport, which makes it an easy first or last stop as well as a whole holiday.
The Villas Del Mar end where you are staying is the newer, quieter half, condos rather than resorts and beaches with fewer people on them. Weekends, especially Sundays, fill with Dominican families out from the capital, which is the best time to see the place as it actually is. Weekdays are yours.
Eat at El Concón on the Carretera Nueva for Dominican and Mediterranean plates and wood-fired pizza, open daily until eleven, or head west to Deli Swiss on the Guayacanes beachfront for something more formal. Come between December and April for the driest, sunniest weather, with January and February busiest. Hurricane season runs June to November and peaks between August and October, when September is the wettest month and prices are lowest.

Book it if you want a kitchen, a balcony and the beach a minute away, and can live with a building nobody has updated in years. For a couple staying a week, or anyone bringing a small dog, the position and the price are hard to beat on this coast. Do not book it if you need working Wi-Fi in your room, a lift you can rely on, or a card machine at the desk. Bring cash, ask for a sea view.
