Overview

A pub stay on Horse Street

The Portcullis Hotel is the listed pub at 11 Horse Street, in the market town of Chipping Sodbury. The listing name is The Portcullis. Rooms are simple: one double and one twin, both small, with tea, coffee and Wi-Fi. The bar, a games room and a garden are part of the stay. It is a town-centre pub with rooms, not a quiet country hotel.

Chipping Sodbury is in South Gloucestershire, on the edge of the Cotswolds and outside the Cotswolds National Landscape. Another hotel, The Portcullis Hotel in Stirling, uses a similar name. This page is only the building at 11 Horse Street, BS37 6DA.

What the listing actually is

Historic England records this building as PORTCULLIS HOTEL, 11, HORSE STREET. It is Grade II, list entry 1129276, first listed on 29 July 1983. The official description dates the main fabric to the 17th century, in rubble with a slate roof, and records a later two-storey extension with a coach entrance. The left-hand wing is an early or mid-18th-century rebuilding in Pennant sandstone and limestone.

That history explains the character of the front. It does not promise that every bedroom still looks like an 18th-century room. The photographs show a navy bedroom wall, a bar, and a compact bathroom. No photograph is tied to a named room type.

The bar, with wine and cocktail lists and a stand reading The Portcullis Hotel, Chipping Sodbury.

Rooms above a working bar

The two rooms are a double of about 12.7 square metres and a twin of about 9.5 square metres. Both list a shower, tea and coffee, a kettle, a refrigerator and a television. Neither listing record gives occupancy, a floor or a view, and neither photograph on this page is tied to a room name.

The bar is the other half of the decision. Friday and Saturday entertainment is advertised until late, and guests describe music continuing until about 01:00. Upper floors are by stairs. If that is the evening you want, the location is excellent. If you need quiet, a confirmed private bathroom or breakfast, choose a different stay.

A good fit for

  • You want to sleep in the centre of Chipping Sodbury, close to High Street.
  • A pub with a bar, a games room and late Friday and Saturday entertainment suits the trip.
  • A simple double or a compact twin is enough, and you do not need a guaranteed quiet night.

Worth knowing

  • Upper floors are reached by stairs only. A step-free bedroom is not established.
  • The listing both describes en-suite shower rooms and records a shared toilet. A current listing answer says there is no private bathroom. Check the room before you pay.
  • Breakfast is not established. One guest in July 2025 said none was available.
  • Parking is free public space on High Street and at the car park off Barnhill Road, not a hotel car park.
  • Friday and Saturday entertainment runs late, and recent guests describe music until about 01:00.
  • The current operator is not established from the public company records checked on 21 September 2026.

Beyond the essentials

Interesting points about The Portcullis Hotel

Listed since 1983

The building at 11 Horse Street is Grade II listed under National Heritage List entry 1129276, and was first listed on 29 July 1983. The listing name is Portcullis Hotel. That record is the surest way to tell this pub from any other Portcullis.

Seventeenth century, then a coach entrance

Historic England dates the main building to the 17th century and describes rubble walls, a slate roof, two storeys with a gabled attic, and a later extension with a coach entrance. The left-hand wing is recorded as an early or mid-18th-century rebuilding, with alternating Pennant sandstone and limestone.

Not the hotel in Stirling

A search for the bare name The Portcullis Hotel also finds a different hotel at Castle Wynd, Stirling. The Chipping Sodbury property is 11 Horse Street, BS37 6DA. Use the address and list entry 1129276 if a result does not mention this town.

Public parking, not a hotel car park

South Gloucestershire Council says there is free parking on High Street and in the public car park off Barnhill Road. Nothing in the research establishes a reserved bay at the hotel. Read the signs for time limits.

The train is at Yate

Yate station is the practical rail stop, at 6 Station Road. The way to the northbound platform uses a long, steep ramp. The station is step-free category B2, which is not the same as an easy route from every platform to the hotel.

Verdict

Is The Portcullis Hotel right for you?

Choose The Portcullis Hotel for a central Chipping Sodbury room and a pub atmosphere, including late entertainment at the weekend. Look elsewhere if you need a quiet Friday or Saturday, a confirmed private bathroom, breakfast, or step-free access to the bedroom. The building, the address and the two room sizes are clear. The operator, a published phone number and the exact bathroom for each room are not.

Location

Get to know the neighbourhood

The hotel is on Horse Street in Chipping Sodbury, not in Bristol and not in Yate. The centre is a walk around High Street, Broad Street and Horse Street. Yate is the rail town next door. A Google map embed for the exact entrance was not added, because a checked Share embed for this pin was not available. The coordinates on the listing were not confirmed as the guest door.

By train

Use Yate station, at 6 Station Road. National Rail classes it as step-free category B2, with no claim that every platform route is easy. Access to the northbound platform crosses a busy road bridge and uses a long, steep ramp. The listing places the station 3.1 km from the property pin. That figure is not a walked measurement.

By bus

The Y6 runs between Bristol, Yate and Chipping Sodbury. From 30 August 2026, Bristol departures towards the town use Rupert Street stop B6. Travelwest also shows a Y8 linking Chipping Sodbury and Yate station. From 20:00 on 21 September until 06:00 on 24 September 2026, First Bus says High Street is closed overnight and the Y6 skips several central stops, including The Clock. That notice is dated. Check the operator on the day.

By car

Park on High Street or in the public car park off Barnhill Road, where the council says parking is free, subject to the signs. Do not expect a hotel car park at the door.

Useful journeys

  • Yate station → 11 Horse Street, Chipping SodburyPublic transport · 3.1 km

The listing gives Yate station as 3.1 km from the property pin. This page did not measure the walk, the bus or a taxi. National Rail places the station at 6 Station Road and classes it step-free category B2. The way to the northbound platform uses a long, steep ramp. The Y6 and the Y8 both connect Yate with Chipping Sodbury. Overnight High Street closures until early 24 September 2026 can move the central stops.

Visitor information

The area

Chipping Sodbury

Chipping Sodbury is a market town in South Gloucestershire. The tourist information centre describes a planned 12th-century town and a market charter of 1227, which is why the wide High Street is the place to start. The information point is in the Clock Tower. Published 2026 hours are Monday to Friday 10:00 to 16:00 and Saturday 10:30 to 14:30 from April, and opening depends on volunteers.

For a meal beyond the pub, Siam Thai at 1 Horse Street is the closest checked example. The Hamptons Deli Cafe at 21a High Street, Il Gusto d'Italia at 66 Rounceval Street and the Royal Oak on Broad Street are covered in the Chipping Sodbury town guide. Dyrham Park is a National Trust visit outside the town, and parts of the parkland are steep and uneven. Westonbirt, the National Arboretum, asks visitors to book ahead for the autumn period from 25 September to 15 November 2026. The Cotswold Way passes through Old Sodbury, just under two miles away, and it does not run along this High Street.

KirstyCoupleUnited Kingdom

7/ 10

Kirsty praised friendly staff and a complimentary drink while the room was finished. The stay was a Saturday, with a crowded party and very loud music until closing around 01:00. The noise dropped soon after. She would not recommend the hotel to anyone wanting a quiet early night.

PaulGroupUnited Kingdom

6/ 10

Paul, on a fourth visit, said the location suited him and the nightly price was acceptable. He found the dining-room setup poor, with clean cutlery for only one of two nights, and no spoons in the room.

CatherineFamilyUnited Kingdom

5/ 10

Catherine liked the location, clean beds and towels, and easy key collection. A fan helped with the window shut. She reported a DJ until 01:00 on Friday and Saturday, a window propped with a wooden brick, a mouldy mini-fridge, and an en-suite that was not very clean.

CookCoupleUnited Kingdom

6/ 10

Cook, staying a second time, liked the position and found the room clean and comfortable. Check-in was advertised from 14:00, and the room was not available until 16:00, which left the guests without a place to wait in the heat.

LacyCoupleUnited Kingdom

7/ 10

Lacy found the room clean and the bed comfortable. There was no breakfast. The en-suite was acceptable and very cramped.

Stay essentials

The Portcullis Hotel

Check-in
Check-out

Smoking
Not allowed

Check-in and check-out

Check-in is listed from 14:00 to 20:00, and check-out is by 10:00. The minimum age for the person checking in is 18. A guest in July 2025 said the room was not ready until 16:00, so treat 14:00 as the start of the window rather than a promise that the room is free at that minute.

Children and extra beds

Children of any age are welcome. Cots and extra beds are not available, so the beds already in the room have to be enough. Add children's ages when you check availability so the listing can show the right occupancy.

Pets

Pets are allowed on request. Charges may apply. Ask about the charge and any house rules for the dates you want, because the listing does not publish a set fee. Assistance animals are not described separately from the pet request.

Smoking

The listing says the property is non-smoking throughout, and it also lists a designated smoking area. Indoor rooms should be treated as non-smoking. Ask where the designated area is if you need it.

Parking

There is no confirmed hotel car park or reserved bay. South Gloucestershire Council says there is free parking on High Street and in the public car park off Barnhill Road. Free does not mean unlimited. Read the signs for time limits. Electric-vehicle charging was not found.

Breakfast

Breakfast is not established. The listing does not answer whether it is served, and a guest in July 2025 said none was available. Do not assume it is included. Ask when you book if breakfast matters.

Cancellation

Cancellation and prepayment depend on the room and the dates. Read the conditions on the rate you choose before you pay. This guide does not restate a single cancellation rule, because the listing says those terms vary.

Weekend noise

The listing says the bar is busy, with live entertainment on Friday and Saturday evenings until late, and that noise may be heard in some rooms. Guests in 2025 and 2026 describe music continuing until about 01:00. Come for that atmosphere, or choose another stay if you need an early night.

Payment

The current listing field says cash. An older property reply, from May 2020, said rooms were payable by card only. Those two statements are not reconciled here. Check the payment terms on the rate you book.

Bathrooms

Do not assume a private bathroom. The property description says each bedroom has an en-suite shower room. Room amenities include a shared toilet. A property reply on 14 October 2021 said the guest had a private shower and toilet. A current listing answer says the property does not have rooms with a private bathroom. One photograph shows a compact bathroom, and it does not identify which room it belongs to. If a private bathroom is essential, confirm it on the selected room before you pay.

Wi-Fi

Free Wi-Fi is listed in the rooms. No speed, broadband test or dedicated workspace was established, so do not plan a working day around an unverified connection.

FAQs

FAQs

Who owns The Portcullis Hotel in Chipping Sodbury?

The current operator was not established. THE PORTCULLIS HOTEL LIMITED, company 14320392, went into creditors' voluntary liquidation in August 2024. An older company, 08892979, was dissolved on 5 February 2019. MMCLEISURE LIMITED has correspondence at 11 Portcullis Hotel and Rachel Hinder is a director, which is a corporate link to the address, not proof of who runs the hotel. No host profile is published on this page.

What is the phone number?

No phone number, email or social profile is published here. CAMRA and a business directory associate 01454 852933 with this address, and the hotel's own website could not be opened to confirm it. A different number and an email for the Royal Oak were rejected.

What are the opening times?

Current bar opening hours were not established. Directory schedules disagree, and a 2013 council article about licence conditions is too old to use. Check-in for rooms is listed from 14:00 to 20:00. Friday and Saturday entertainment is described as running until late.
