Sleep Inside a Working Cambridge College
Almost nobody gets to sleep inside a Cambridge college. At West Court you do, and not in a stripped-back student room: this is a purpose-built wing of Jesus College with a proper reception desk on Jesus Lane, a lift, daily housekeeping and rooms that hold their own against any city hotel.
What you are really buying is the address. Jesus College was founded in 1496 on the site of a 12th-century Benedictine nunnery, and the guest card that comes with your room opens the whole of it. You can cut through the courts on your way into town, walk the sculpture trail before breakfast, and sit in on choral Evensong in a chapel older than the college itself. The Round Church is four minutes away, King's College Chapel about ten.
One Address, Two Very Different Buildings
The listings never spell this out, so here it is. The en-suite rooms are in West Court itself, the 2017 building by Níall McLaughlin Architects that took a RIBA National Award the following year. Oak fins, tall window doors, red and buff brick, grey carpet, green cushions, a lift to every floor, and on most of the doubles a balcony looking over the grounds.
The smaller shared-bathroom singles and doubles are somewhere else entirely: the older adjoining building, with parquet floors, leaded casement windows, dark wood wardrobes and, in a few rooms, a handsome green-tiled Victorian fireplace. They are lovely rooms and they are the honest budget option, but they are reached by stairs only, and the bathroom is shared along the corridor between a handful of rooms. If step-free access matters, or you simply do not want to share, book an en-suite grade.
Breakfast in Hall, and a Bar That Brews Its Own
Breakfast is served in the college dining hall, and it is the single thing guests write home about after the location: deep claret walls, oak panelling, chandeliers and long oak tables, with a buffet running to full English, vegetarian, vegan and gluten free. Set an alarm, because it runs 07:30 to 09:00 on weekdays and 08:00 to 09:30 at weekends, and that is genuinely the most common complaint on the whole property.
The rest of the day happens in the Roost cafe bar, under an oak coffered ceiling with glass doors onto the lawn, and in the Brewery Room next door. Jesus College Brewery has been brewing on site since 2018 and pours its own JPA pale ale, WEST lager and ROOST stout; as a house guest you pay the members' rate. Both take card only.

- The two room grades are in two different buildings. The en-suite rooms are in the 2017 West Court block and are reached by lift; the smaller shared-bathroom rooms are in the older adjoining building and are reached by stairs only. Listings sell them side by side without ever saying so.
- Balconies exist, whatever the listing Q&A says. The college confirms that most of the en-suite doubles have one, there is a whole room type built around a balcony, and guests keep describing them as a surprise. Ask for one when you book.

Location and Getting Around
Jesus Lane is the quiet side of central Cambridge. It runs east from Bridge Street towards Midsummer Common, so you get the green edge of the city on one side and the whole medieval core two minutes away on the other. Step out of the West Court doors and you are already inside the walkable city: the Round Church is four minutes on foot, the punt station at Magdalene Bridge about the same, Market Square five to seven minutes, and King's College Chapel around ten.
Come by train. Cambridge station is 1.4 miles away, a 25 to 30 minute walk through the centre or a five-minute taxi, and one recent guest put their fare from the station at under ten pounds. There is no guest parking here and most of the historic core is closed to through traffic, so if you must drive, aim for one of the five Park and Ride sites on the edge of the city, or the multi-storeys at Queen Anne Terrace or Grand Arcade. Both have a 2.1 metre height limit and both are a 10 to 15 minute walk away.

The Round Church
The Church of the Holy Sepulchre was built around 1130 and is one of only four medieval round churches still in use in England. It sits at the top of Bridge Street, four minutes on foot from the door, and is run as a visitor centre.

The building everyone comes to see. Late Perpendicular Gothic, with the largest fan vault in the world, raised between 1512 and 1515 by the master mason John Wastell. About ten minutes away on foot, with timed tickets and an admission charge.

Chauffeured punts leave from the Quayside at Magdalene Bridge, four minutes from Jesus Lane, and drift down past the Backs and the college bridges. Book at a licensed station rather than with the touts on King's Parade.

Midsummer Common
Open riverside grass five minutes east along Jesus Lane, still grazed by cattle in summer and the setting for the Midsummer Fair and Strawberry Fair. The quickest route to a riverside pub.

- Arrive at Cambridge station: Trains from London King's Cross take about 48 minutes and from Liverpool Street about 75. Come out onto Station Road; the taxi rank is straight ahead.
- Take a taxi, or walk it: A taxi takes five to eight minutes. On foot it is 1.4 miles and 25 to 30 minutes, and the walk is the nicer option if you are not carrying much.
- Head for Bridge Street: Walking, follow Hills Road into Regent Street, then Sidney Street and Bridge Street. You will pass Christ's Pieces and the Round Church on the way.
- Turn into Jesus Lane: Turn right off Bridge Street into Jesus Lane. The West Court entrance is on the left, under the carved stone name panel and the college crest.
- Check in at West Court reception: Reception is staffed 07:30 to 20:00 and check-in runs from 15:00 to 21:00. Bring photo ID and a credit card. Arriving later, call the Porters' Lodge on +44 1223 339339.
Cambridge for First-Time Visitors
Cambridge is small, and that is its great advantage. You can cross the medieval core on foot in twenty minutes, which means the colleges, the Backs, the museums and the river are all part of the same afternoon. King's College Chapel and its fan vault are the headline; the Fitzwilliam Museum and Kettle's Yard are free; the Corpus Clock ticks away on a street corner for nothing at all.
Do the punting. Chauffeured trips leave from Magdalene Bridge, four minutes from Jesus Lane, and from Mill Lane at the other end of the Backs. Book a licensed operator at a proper station rather than one of the touts on King's Parade. Then walk out to Grantchester through the meadows for tea in the orchard, or keep it local and cross Midsummer Common to the Fort St George for a pint by the water.
Two practical things. Several colleges charge admission and many close to visitors during exams, roughly late April to June, so check before you set out. And the city belongs to bicycles, not cars: Cambridge has the highest cycle-to-work share in England, and the station's cycle park is the largest in the country.

Two things come up again and again: how central it is, and how strange and good it feels to have the run of a real Cambridge college. Breakfast in the hall and the friendliness of the staff take most of the rest of the praise, and balconies keep turning up as a happy surprise. The grumbles are all small and all operational: an early checkout, a breakfast window that closes before most holidays get going, showers with more force than anyone asked for, and bathroom fans that switch themselves on and are louder than they need to be.

West Court's own rooms are sold all year, but the college is a working one and the wider room stock opens up mainly outside Full Term. Michaelmas Full Term runs 6 October to 4 December 2026, Lent 19 January to 19 March 2027 and Easter 27 April to 18 June 2027. Book early if your dates fall inside those windows.
Breakfast ends early, and so does the day
Breakfast is served 07:30 to 09:00 on weekdays and 08:00 to 09:30 at weekends and public holidays, and checkout is 10:00. Extra breakfasts beyond the ones in your reservation are £15.95 per person.
There is no guest parking
None at all, other than an accessible space arranged in advance. Queen Anne Terrace and Grand Arcade car parks are a 10 to 15 minute walk and both cap vehicle height at 2.1 metres.
