Double room with a corner desk and office chair by two windows, a chest of drawers and a tartan-covered double bed

Simple rooms, and every one shares a bathroom

There are five kinds of room, all with shared bathrooms. Four are described as ground floor; the Budget Single doesn't say which floor it's on, so ask if stairs are a problem.

The biggest is a 19 square metre double with a double bed and a single, plus a sofa, and a fold-up bed can be added. It's listed for up to four, but treat that as the maximum head count rather than four proper beds. The other doubles and singles get smaller from there, down to the 7 square metre Budget Single, which is fine for one person who just needs a bed and a desk.

A shared kitchen with white cabinets, a hob, oven, microwave and two stools.

The kitchen is for everyone

The kitchen is shared. A couple of the room listings still say private kitchen, but the property's own description says shared, and that's how guests describe using it. Plan on sharing it unless the rate you book clearly says otherwise.

A continental breakfast is offered. Whether it's included depends on the rate, so have a look at that line on the booking page before you count on it.

A good fit for

  • Drivers who want free parking without the city-centre prices
  • Anyone happy to share a bathroom and a kitchen to keep the cost down
  • People who want a clean single or double to sleep in, not a hotel experience

Worth knowing

  • Every room shares a bathroom
  • It's in south Bristol, so the harbour and Clifton are a bus ride or a drive away
  • Nobody has confirmed a step-free route from the car to the rooms, so ask before you book if that matters

Beyond the essentials

Interesting points about Dan's Homestay

One thing to know before you book: the kitchen is shared

A couple of the room listings say private kitchen, but the property's own description says it's shared, and that matches what guests describe. So plan on sharing it. It's a perfectly good kitchen for breakfast or a simple supper, and it's one of the reasons a longer stay here stays cheap.

Verdict

Is Dan's Homestay right for you?

If you're driving to Bristol, want somewhere clean and cheap to sleep, and don't mind sharing a bathroom and a kitchen, Dan's Homestay does the job well, and guests keep mentioning how helpful Dan is. If you want your own bathroom, or you'd rather walk out of the door into the harbourside, look at somewhere central instead.

Spectrum House is on Crossways Road in Knowle, in south Bristol (BS4 2SP). The harbourside is a different part of the city, so plan a bus or a drive rather than a stroll. The distances listed with the map are estimates for the shortest walking or driving route, not journey times.

By train

Bristol Temple Meads is the station to aim for, about 2.6 km from the house. Dan's own answer to a guest was that it's roughly half an hour on foot, so with luggage a taxi or the bus is the kinder option. One guest in 2025 found the climb up from Bath Road steep, so allow for that if you do decide to walk. The station has step-free access to its platforms, but nobody has checked a step-free route from there to the house or into the rooms, so ask before you rely on one.

By bus

Dan has told guests the nearest stop with frequent buses into the centre is about five minutes' walk from the house, with services from roughly half past six in the morning until about eleven at night, and the stops on Greenwood Road, the next street along, are the likely ones. Bristol's buses are run by First and you can tap on and off with a contactless card or phone, so there's no ticket to sort out in advance. Treat Dan's times as his estimate rather than a timetable, and check First's current times before a late night out.

By air

Bristol Airport is about 11 km away. The A1 Airport Flyer bus links the terminal with Temple Meads, and from there you finish the journey by taxi or local bus as above. There's no shuttle to the door: Dan's Homestay doesn't offer airport transfers.

By car

Driving is the simplest way to arrive. There's free private parking on site, which a recent guest described as gated, though nobody has published the width of the gate, so a van or a car with a roof box is worth checking with Dan first. Put BS4 2SP in the sat nav; the exact guest entrance hasn't been confirmed, so ask Dan where to pull in when you let him know your arrival time. If you'll be driving into the centre, run the car through Bristol City Council's Clean Air Zone checker before you go: older petrol and diesel cars that don't meet the standard pay £9 a day inside the zone, and parking at the house and catching the bus in keeps that simple.

The area

Getting into the city

This is a south Bristol address, so for the Harbourside, the Old City or Clifton you'll be taking the bus or driving rather than walking. That's the trade-off with staying here: you don't step straight out of the door into the sights, and in return you get a free parking space and buses close by for the ride in. If your days are built around the harbour museums, the Old City or Clifton's Georgian streets, allow for that journey each way and plan evenings around the last bus or a taxi. It suits people who are happy to treat the centre as a short trip rather than a doorstep.

Guest reviews

Guest reviews

As of late September 2026 the place scores 7.9 from 186 reviews, with staff the highest-rated part at 8.9. The things guests keep praising are how clean it is, how much room you get for the money, and how helpful Dan is. The things to weigh up are the shared facilities, the distance from the centre, and the odd comment about noise, the temperature or the Wi-Fi.

OladijeCoupleUnited Kingdom

8/ 10

Oladije and his partner liked the spot, found the room clean and roomy, and thought Dan was friendly and went out of his way to help. They enjoyed the garden too. Their one grumble was the distance from town, which they solved with buses and taxis.

VitaliySolo travellerEstonia

8/ 10

Vitaliy thought the price was good, slept well on a firm bed in a double room, and had a light breakfast included in his rate. He felt it was more a small hotel than a homestay, and although the place was quiet, doors and locks banged late at night; he'd have liked a firm rule about noise after 11pm.

AmandeepCoupleUnited Kingdom

9/ 10

Amandeep and his partner were welcomed by Dan, shown all the facilities, and found the room very clean. They had nothing to fault.

VladimirFamilyFinland

8/ 10

Vladimir's family found the host kind and helpful, the room clean and spacious, the shared toilet and shower spotless, and the street quiet. The kitchen looked a bit dated to them, though it had everything they needed, and breakfast was simple: bread and the basics.

AustinCoupleUnited Kingdom

7/ 10

Austin and his partner found it comfortable and convenient, though they thought the place could do with some updating. There was no television in the room and the internet kept dropping.

LawsonSolo travellerUnited Kingdom

8/ 10

Lawson, on a one-night stopover, liked the location and the private off-road parking, had a large bedroom, and found breakfast adequate. He described the set-up as quirky: a small communal TV lounge, a shared kitchen and a small dining area, with the shared bathrooms he had known about when booking.

AnoopkrishnaSolo travellerUnited Kingdom

9/ 10

Anoopkrishna spent a few days here and would recommend it. His room was spacious, quiet and neatly kept, and Dan was a great help, guiding him in late at night and always reachable by phone.
