Overview

A closer look at your stay

The Vintage Inn is a small pub with rooms in the middle of Wellington. You eat and drink downstairs, and the bedrooms are on the upper floors. Historic England lists the building as The Vintage Public House, a Grade II entry first made on 1 July 1976, with an 18th-century painted-brick front, probably to an earlier building.

Three rooms are sold in two categories. The family room is the larger of the two, at about 22.5 square metres. The double or twin room is about 16 square metres. Both are described as having a private bathroom. The listing does not say how the beds are arranged, or which room is reached by which stair, so those choices need a question at booking if they matter to you.

Order at the bar

Downstairs is a working pub. One interior wall still carries the painted words Old Vintage Inn Wine Vaults, and a sign asks you to order food at the bar. Real ales are on the taps. The kitchen hours on the operator's site are 11:00 to 14:30 every day, 18:00 to 21:00 from Monday to Saturday, and a Sunday roast from 12:00 to 14:30. Those hours are for the kitchen, not a published breakfast sitting.

Two room sizes, and an unknown bed

If you are choosing between the rooms, start with the size. The family room is about 22.5 square metres and the double or twin is about 16. Both list a private bathroom, a television and tea and coffee. The listing never states the bed layout or how many people each room sleeps, and cots and extra beds are not available. An older reply left open whether every double or twin bathroom is a full en suite, so ask if you need the bathroom to open off the bedroom.

A good fit for

  • A night in Wellington with dinner downstairs and breakfast before you leave.
  • Travellers with a dog, once the fee on the selected rate is clear.
  • Guests who are happy with stairs and a pub that is still open in the evening.

Worth knowing

  • Entertainment and the bar can be noisy if you go to bed early.
  • The free car park is small, and several 2026 guests found it tight to turn in.
  • There is no verified lift or step-free route to the bedrooms. A labelled accessible parking space does not change that.
  • Breakfast is served, but it is not confirmed as included in every rate.

Beyond the essentials

Interesting points about The Vintage Inn

A listed pub, not a new hotel

Historic England lists The Vintage Public House at 24 Fore Street as Grade II, entry 1059922, first listed on 1 July 1976. The record describes a three-storey 18th-century painted-brick front, probably to an earlier building. The operator's line about more than 400 years belongs to that earlier history and is not the listing date.

The cottages are separate stays

The operator's overnight-stays page treats Corner House Bulford, Magnolia Cottage, Mantle Street and Cosy Cottage as other Wellington stays. They are not extra rooms at 24 Fore Street.

The beer garden is set up for a crowd

The operator's about page describes the beer garden with tables, a children's play area, heaters, a marquee and a garden stage. One supplied photograph shows a covered table and a heater, not the play area or the stage.

Verdict

Is The Vintage Inn right for you?

Book The Vintage Inn if a central pub, a cooked breakfast and a short walk to the museum are what you want from Wellington. Choose somewhere else if you need a quiet hotel, a lift, or an easy place to park a large car.

Bed arrangement not stated on the listing.

The larger of the two room types, listed at about 22.5 square metres, with a private bathroom, a television and tea and coffee. The bed arrangement and the number of guests it sleeps were not captured. Cots and extra beds are not available, so a family needs the beds already in the room to be enough.

Location

Get to know the neighbourhood

The inn is at 24 Fore Street, Wellington, TA21 8AQ, in the town centre. Wellington Museum is a few doors along at 28 Fore Street. High Street continues the shops and the town bus stops. Wellington has no passenger station at the moment, so the train is Taunton, then a bus or a short drive. A Google Maps embed for the exact entrance was not collected, so this page does not show a pin.

By train

Use Taunton station, then First Bus 22, 22A or X22 towards Wellington. National Rail lists Taunton as step-free within the station. That does not make the bus, the inn stairs or the last walk step-free. There is no hotel shuttle from the station.

By car

The inn has free private parking, and guests are not asked to reserve a bay. The space is small. If you cannot turn in it, use South Street or Longforth Road and walk. The route from those car parks to the front door, and any gate or unloading spot at the inn, was not verified. No on-site EV charging was verified.

Useful journeys

  • Taunton railway station → 24 Fore Street, WellingtonDrive · 11.5 km · Approx. 15 min

A driving route measured on 21 September 2026 was about 11.5 km and 15 minutes from the Wikipedia coordinate for Taunton railway station to the listing coordinate on Fore Street. The Fore Street point is the supplied listing pin, not a checked entrance, and the time is a routing estimate rather than a driven journey. The bus is First Bus 22, 22A or X22. No printed bus duration is given here.

Wellington Monument

The National Trust monument stands on the Blackdown Hills, south of town. The tower is the outing. This photograph was taken on 27 August 2018, before the Trust finished later repairs and reopened the monument in 2021, so the fence and door are not a current arrival guide. Check the Trust for the 232 steps, tours and access before you go.

Visitor information

The area

Using Wellington as a base

Stay on Fore Street if you want the museum, the High Street and the town buses close together. The Monument is a separate outing on the Blackdown Hills, south of town, and Castle Fields is seasonal rather than a town-centre walk. Drivers coming off the M5 can treat the edge of town differently from this street. If the train matters more than the town, Taunton is the staffed station and sits outside Wellington, not in it.

First Bus routes 22, 22A and X22 run between Taunton and Wellington. Digital Slinky is an on-demand bus for Taunton and Wellington, booked ahead, and it is not a hotel shuttle. Public car parks at South Street and Longforth Road are the council fallback if the inn's own space is full. The walk from those car parks to the front door was not measured.

8.2/ 10

383 Guest reviews

On 21 September 2026 the live listing showed 8.2 from 383 reviews. The captured package had shown 8.3 from the same count, so treat the number as the score on that date. Across the recent reviews, staff, breakfast and comfortable rooms come up again and again. The repeated drawbacks are a small car park, noise when the pub is busy, and a building that feels traditional rather than newly fitted. Category scores captured with the package were cleanliness 8.8, comfort 8.7, location 9.1, facilities 8.2, staff 9.5, value 8.8 and free Wi-Fi 8.1.

NewtonSolo travellerUnited Kingdom

9/ 10

Newton, staying one night, praised the staff, a spacious family room and a filling breakfast, and said dogs were welcome. The bathroom was small but usable. One single bed squeaked when he turned over.

SusanFamilyUnited Kingdom

9/ 10

Susan was breaking the journey towards Cornwall. She wrote about the atmosphere, the music, the staff and the pub dogs, and said her own dog was fine. Breakfast and dinner both suited the party.

LynnSolo travellerUnited Kingdom

8/ 10

Lynn found the bedroom comfortable and clean, the staff friendly, and breakfast cooked to order. The pub was too noisy for an early night, and she noted that other guests might not mind.

TerriSolo travellerUnited Kingdom

8/ 10

Terri liked the breakfast, a clean comfortable room and the staff. The complaint was the car park: limited, small, and tight to manoeuvre.

JackieSolo travellerUnited Kingdom

9/ 10

Jackie described a comfortable stay, helpful staff, and a clean room, pub and beer garden. The food was generous, and there was entertainment on the Saturday night. Two nights was not enough for this trip.

BimSolo travellerUnited Kingdom

8/ 10

Bim called it a quirky pub and praised the staff, a clean bedroom, breakfast and the town-centre position. Entertainment on the night was a plus. The building felt a little tired, and Bim said not to expect a plush modern hotel.

Stay essentials

Breakfast

Cooked breakfast is served, and guests often mention local produce and a cooked-to-order plate. Whether it is included depends on the rate. Breakfast hours are not published separately from the kitchen. The kitchen itself is listed as 11:00 to 14:30 daily, 18:00 to 21:00 Monday to Saturday, and a Sunday roast from 12:00 to 14:30. A gluten-free reply from January 2025 is too old to treat as the current offer, so ask about allergies when you book.

Parking

Free private parking is on site and does not need a reservation. Guests in August and September 2026 described it as small and tight to turn in. Bay count, the gate and a luggage drop at the door were not verified. If it is full, South Street and Longforth Road are council car parks. No on-site EV charging was verified. Street parking is also named on the listing.

Check-in and check-out

Check-out is by 11:00, and the listing allows departure from 07:00. Check-in is not settled: the captured house rules say 13:00 to 23:00, while a hotel profile checked the same day said 14:00. The operator's website does not decide between them. The person checking in must be at least 18. Reception hours are not published. Luggage storage is listed. Early or late arrival is a request, not a promise.

Stairs and access

The bedrooms are on the upper floors and the route is by stairs. No lift and no step-free bedroom route were verified. An older reply placed a room on the second floor, which is not enough to describe every room. Accessible parking on the listing is a parking label, not evidence that a bedroom is step-free. Ask about the stair route before you book if stairs are a problem.

Children

Children of any age are welcome. Cots and extra beds are not available, and the listing does not state how many people each room sleeps. Do not assume the family room can take extra children beyond the beds already in it. The check-in guest must be 18 or over.

Dogs

Dogs are allowed. A November 2023 reply said they could stay without a charge, on a lead in the pub. Listing fine print read on 21 September 2026 reported £10 per dog per night. Use the fee on the rate you are booking. Assistance-animal arrangements were not found. Pet bowls are listed.

Cancellation and payment

Cancellation and prepayment follow the rate you select. There is no single property-wide deposit rule in the captured house rules. The listing names cash as an accepted payment method and does not set out a card policy here.

Wi-Fi and noise

Free Wi-Fi is listed in the rooms. Speed was not tested, and the captured guest score for free Wi-Fi was 8.1. Smoking is not allowed indoors. A designated smoking area is signed on the street front. Live music, evening entertainment and occasional late events are part of the pub, so a light sleeper should ask which nights are busy.

FAQs

FAQs

What food does The Vintage Inn serve?

It is a pub with a restaurant and bar. The operator publishes kitchen hours of 11:00 to 14:30 every day, evening food from 18:00 to 21:00 Monday to Saturday, and a Sunday roast from 12:00 to 14:30. Real ales are on the bar. The day's menu is not reprinted here.

When is The Vintage Inn open?

Use the kitchen hours above for food. A board on the front has advertised the pub open until 1:30, which is a sign in a photograph rather than a published weekly timetable. Breakfast hours are separate and were not published. Check the operator or the listing on the day if you are arriving late.

How much is a room?

This guide does not publish room rates. Prices and cancellation terms sit on the booking listing and change with the date. Check availability there for the stay you want.

Is breakfast included?

Breakfast is served, often described by guests as cooked and filling. Inclusion is a rate condition, not something this page can promise for every booking. Breakfast times were not published separately from the kitchen hours.

Where do I park?

There is free private parking on site, and you do not reserve a bay. It is small and tight. South Street and Longforth Road are the council car parks if you need another option. The walk from those car parks to the door was not measured.

Can I bring a dog?

Yes. Recheck the fee: an older reply said dogs could stay at no charge, and listing fine print on 21 September 2026 reported £10 per dog per night. Dogs were asked to be on a lead in the pub. Assistance animals were not covered in the sources checked.

Is there a lift?

No lift was verified. The bedrooms are upstairs. A labelled accessible parking space does not mean the bedroom route is step-free. Ask about stairs before you book if that decides the stay.

Can children stay?

Children of any age are welcome. Cots and extra beds are not available. The listing does not say how the family room is made up, so check that the beds suit your party. The guest who checks in must be 18 or over.

Where exactly is it?

24 Fore Street, Wellington, Somerset, TA21 8AQ, United Kingdom. This is the town in Somerset, not Wellington in New Zealand, Shropshire or Tasmania. The museum is at 28 Fore Street.

Are the cottages part of this stay?

No. Corner House Bulford, Magnolia Cottage, Mantle Street and Cosy Cottage are other stays marketed by the operator. This page is only the rooms at 24 Fore Street. The current listing sells three rooms here, in two categories.
