The destination guide
Hawes is the main town of Upper Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Staying in town puts shops, places to eat and the Dales Countryside Museum within the same small-town base, with Wensleydale Creamery and the surrounding dale to explore. Decide how much you want to do on foot and how much you will rely on a car or rural bus timetable.
When to visit Hawes
Summer brings additional ways to explore the Dales by bus, while autumn and winter require closer attention to connections and opening days. The extra summer 2026 services advertised for Hawes ended on 17 or 18 October. Their dates do not establish a 2027 timetable; use the current DalesBus information for your travel day.
The Dales Countryside Museum changes its published hours between February-to-October and November-to-December. Its current schedule also includes Christmas and New Year exceptions and closure from 4 to 31 January 2027. Check its live opening page before building an itinerary around a visit. Individual accommodation may have its own seasonal closure.
For walking, check the forecast and current conditions close to departure. A town-based visit offers indoor options such as the museum, but it does not guarantee that every attraction or food venue will be open on a particular day.
Best areas to stay in Hawes
Central Hawes is a useful first choice when you want the museum, shops, meals and bus connections close at hand. Check an individual property’s address and access rather than assuming every central stay is quiet, level or traffic-free. Ebor House, on Burtersett Road, offers an adults-only B&B base; its stairs and seasonal closure deserve attention before booking.
Gayle sits just beyond Hawes on the Little White Bus route. It can suit visitors looking towards the Creamery side of town, but walking times depend on the actual accommodation address. Hardraw is a separate village north of Hawes, useful for a waterfall-focused stay if you are comfortable planning meals, luggage and limited transport.
Bainbridge and Askrigg lie farther down Wensleydale. Treat them as alternative bases rather than neighbourhoods of Hawes. They make more sense when the wider dale matters as much as having Hawes services immediately nearby.
Getting to Hawes and around
Garsdale is the rail gateway identified by the Dales Countryside Museum, about 15 kilometres from the museum in Hawes. Hawes’ former railway station now houses the museum; there is no current passenger station in the town. Little White Bus links Garsdale Station, Hardraw, Hawes and Gayle Monday to Saturday. Check the actual train-to-bus connection, last departure and any booking requirement before travelling.
A car-light stay is possible with planning. The 156 links Leyburn and Hawes, and the Sunday 856 is advertised as running year-round via Northallerton, Bedale, Leyburn and Aysgarth. A broad summer network should not be assumed in winter. Ask about luggage when arranging a bus journey; no general luggage-space guarantee has been established.
Garsdale interchange needs an access check. Northern describes steep or gravelled sections and a route of more than 450 metres between platforms using local roads, with no staff help available. Ask the railway and bus operator about the whole journey if mobility or luggage makes those details important.
Drivers can find paid visitor parking at the museum and National Park Centre in Station Yard, where the museum describes accessible spaces and a drop-off point. Check current signs, tariffs and overnight restrictions. An accommodation’s own parking arrangements are separate; do not assume a public space is reserved for a room.
Things to do around Hawes
Start with the Dales Countryside Museum in Hawes’ former Victorian station for local history and the people and landscape of the Dales. Its operator publishes detailed accessibility information, including ramps, lifts and accessible toilets. Check the current opening schedule and the facilities relevant to your visit.
Wensleydale Creamery is a Hawes attraction on Gayle Lane. It is a useful reason to allow time in town, but current visitor-centre hours, demonstrations, admission and restaurant booking arrangements have not been verified for this guide. Check those details directly before planning a day around them.
Hardraw Force is a separate outing. DalesBus describes Hardraw as a level 1½-mile walk from Hawes, with Little White Bus as an alternative. That description does not certify an accessible route or a walk from every accommodation door. Check the waterfall’s current access and admission arrangements before setting out.
For a longer day on foot, DalesBus points to the 11-mile Hawes Millennium Mosaic Walk. Use the current route leaflet and judge it against your ability and conditions. Snaizeholme’s red squirrel trail is an excursion outside town; the advertised Little White Bus service needs pre-booking.

Food and drink in Hawes
Central Hawes has cafés, tea shops and pubs, making it a practical place to plan meals when staying in town. The White Hart Inn on Main Street advertises a kitchen serving British-style food and a bar. Check current service times and reserve if a particular meal matters to your plans.
The Creamery is also relevant for food, but current restaurant service and booking arrangements need a direct check. Do not rely on an attraction café being open simply because its building is open, or assume evening meals are served at a bed and breakfast.
Discuss dietary needs with the venue before visiting. A menu label or an accommodation’s breakfast offer does not by itself establish allergy procedures or availability for your date.
Frequently asked questions about Hawes
Can visitors stay in Hawes without a car?
Yes, with timetable planning. Staying centrally keeps town services close by, and Garsdale has a Monday-to-Saturday Little White Bus link. Check the exact connection and last bus. The advertised Sunday 856 is a different year-round option; additional summer services do not run throughout winter.
Where should a first-time visitor stay?
Hawes itself is a useful base for food, shops, the museum and bus connections. Gayle and Hardraw are separate nearby village options. Choose using the actual accommodation address, access needs and the journeys you want to make.
Does Hawes have a railway station?
The former station is now the Dales Countryside Museum. Garsdale is the current rail gateway identified by the museum, with a local bus connection that needs checking for your travel date.
Is Hardraw Force walkable from Hawes?
DalesBus describes Hardraw as a level 1½-mile walk from Hawes. That is a general town-to-village description, not a verified accessible route from an accommodation entrance. Check the route, conditions and current waterfall access.
What should winter visitors check?
Confirm accommodation opening, bus connections and attraction dates. The museum currently lists closure from 4 to 31 January 2027 as well as holiday exceptions. Check the latest published schedule rather than applying summer arrangements.
Where can visitors park?
The museum and National Park Centre at Station Yard have paid visitor parking. Current charges and overnight restrictions need checking on signs. Ask accommodation separately about its arrangements; no town-wide parking guarantee is made here.
Is a weekly market guaranteed?
A regular current market schedule has not been independently confirmed for this guide. Check with Hawes Market House before choosing travel dates around it. The market photograph shows a scene from 2011 and is not evidence of today’s trading schedule.
Are the Creamery and waterfall always open?
Current opening, admission and booking arrangements have not been established here. Check directly before travelling, especially out of season or in poor weather. Their inclusion identifies useful local attractions rather than guaranteeing access.
