Santa Cruz here is the California beach town, not the island. The Boardwalk, the Wharf and downtown Pacific Avenue are a realistic walk from three of the hotels we list. Bay Front Inn, Drift Inn and Torch Lite Inn sit in that cluster. National 9 Motel, on Plymouth Street by Highway 1, does not. Treat every minute below as a published estimate, not a route we walked ourselves.
- Walk-first stays are Bay Front Inn on lower Pacific Avenue, Drift Inn on San Lorenzo Boulevard and Torch Lite Inn on Riverside Avenue.
- National 9 Motel is about two miles from the Boardwalk on our guide. A public lodging page puts it at 2.7 km. Neither figure is a walked route, so do not treat it as one.
- The Bay Front Inn's own site says 8 minutes to the Boardwalk and 6 minutes to the Wharf. Drift Inn is about 8 minutes to the Boardwalk on our guide. Torch Lite Inn's five-minute Wharf line does not match the longer published estimates.
- The Santa Cruzer beach shuttle runs weekends and holidays from Memorial Day through Labor Day. It is not the backup for a late September stay.
- Autumn roadworks can change the pavement at the Pacific and Beach roundabout through December 2026, and the river path through December 2027. Follow the signs rather than assuming a clear walk.
Lower Pacific Avenue, with the hotel's own 8-minute walk to the Boardwalk and 6 minutes to the Wharf.
San Lorenzo Boulevard, about 8 minutes to the Boardwalk on our guide, with free parking in the court.
Riverside Avenue and a short published walk to the Boardwalk. Do not trust a five-minute Wharf claim.
Which of these hotels can you walk from?
Three of them, if the Boardwalk and the Wharf are the point of the trip. National 9 Motel is the one that is not in that group. The difference is the street, not the town name on the booking.
Bay Front Inn is at 325 Pacific Avenue. Its own site, checked on 28 September 2026, says the Boardwalk is an 8-minute walk, Main Beach 5 minutes and the Wharf 6 minutes. It stands on Pacific Avenue, so a page that calls the street zero distance only means you are already on it. The 1100 block between Lincoln and Cathcart, the city's downtown anchor, is about 0.7 km away in a straight line. That is not a walked time, and it is not the same thing as stepping out beside the shops.
Drift Inn is at 110 San Lorenzo Boulevard. Our guide puts the Boardwalk at about 8 minutes on foot, and the Wharf inside about 15 minutes. A separate public lodging page is close to that: about 0.7 km and 8 minutes to the Boardwalk, and about 1.1 km and 13 minutes to the Wharf. Those are published walking estimates. They are not a route we measured.
Torch Lite Inn is at 500 Riverside Avenue. A public lodging page puts the Boardwalk at about 0.6 km and 7 minutes, and the Wharf at about 1.0 km and 11 minutes. Our own page groups the Boardwalk, the beach and the Wharf as about five minutes in the opening, then later says about ten minutes to the Wharf. Use the longer Wharf figure. Five minutes to the Wharf is the claim we would not repeat.
🏨Our pick for the WharfBay Front Inn, on lower Pacific Avenue, with the hotel's own 6-minute walk to the Wharf→
🏨Our pick for the ridesTorch Lite Inn, on Riverside Avenue, with a published Boardwalk walk of about 7 minutes→
National 9 Motel is at 130 Plymouth Street, off Highway 1. Our guide says about 1.5 miles to downtown and about two miles to the Boardwalk and the Wharf. A public lodging page places the Boardwalk 2.7 km away. None of those is a walked time, and we would not turn them into one. It can still be the right room if you have a car. It is the wrong room if the whole point is to leave the car parked.
How far is downtown from the beach on foot?
A published walking description puts the commercial stretch of Pacific Avenue at about 15 to 20 minutes from the Wharf, south on Pacific Avenue and then along Beach Street. The straight line between the city's two published points is about 1,050 metres. That straight line is not the walk.
Bay Front Inn sits on the lower part of that street, between the beach and the 1100 block. Drift Inn and Torch Lite Inn have published walks of about 7 or 8 minutes to a point called Pacific Avenue. Those figures do not say you have reached the shops between Lincoln and Cathcart. Read them as “you have reached the street”, not “you are in the middle of downtown”.
The city project list has two jobs on this walk. The Pacific-Beach roundabout work runs from summer 2025 through December 2026 and includes the pavement, the lights and the street level, for a new bike crossing of the tracks. It does not say the pedestrian route is shut. River path lighting and repairs run from Laurel Street to the river mouth from March 2026 through December 2027, and that page does not say the path is shut either. A signed diversion is still possible. Our Santa Cruz guide is the place for the wider stay, including which side of the river you wake up on.
Can you walk it with a suitcase or a pushchair?
The coastal path is the easy part, and the hill into it is the part to plan. The city's West Cliff page describes two and a half miles of wheelchair-accessible path, with the Boardwalk and Wharf at one end and Natural Bridges at the other. The county access guide describes the same coast as about three miles, fairly flat and paved until Bay Street, where it drops down a steep hill to the Wharf. Those are two descriptions of the path, not a promise that every connecting street is level.
On the Boardwalk itself, strollers and wagons are allowed on the property and not in the ride queues or the attractions. The Boardwalk does not hire strollers and has no designated place to leave one. Walking in is free even when the rides are closed, which is a different question from whether the rides are running.
No current pavement survey covers the exact stretches of Pacific Avenue, San Lorenzo Boulevard and Riverside Avenue between these hotels and the Boardwalk. A short published walk is not a promise of a step-free, defect-free path, especially while the roundabout work is on.
Is the walk comfortable after dark?
The distances do not get longer after dark. That is not the same as a promise that every block feels fine. There is no official, block-by-block comparison of the Boardwalk-to-Pacific Avenue streets, so this guide will not rank one as safer than another.
If you are uneasy, take a ride rather than talking yourself into the shortest line on a map. The Boardwalk's own hours listed rides as closed on 28, 29 and 30 September 2026, with the arcades open from 11am to 9pm and Boardwalk Bowl from 11am to midnight. You can still walk the beachfront on a day the rides are shut. Check the hours calendar for the day you are there, because the pattern changes after the summer.
What bus is there when you do not want to walk?
The useful summer shuttle is not running for a late September stay. The Santa Cruzer links downtown and the beach from noon to 8pm on weekends and holidays, from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Downtown pickups include the Del Mar Theatre at 1124 Pacific Avenue and the Locust Street Garage. The beach stop is the exploration centre at 35 Pacific Avenue. After Labor Day, do not plan the day around it.
For National 9 Motel, we could not confirm a bus stop at the front door. Santa Cruz METRO Route 34 is a weekday service. On the timetable checked on 28 September 2026, the last departure from Soquel Avenue and Front is 5:00pm and the last arrival back is 6:09pm. That page does not name Plymouth Street. It is not a late-evening backup, and it is not a weekend service. Use METRO's live planner for the day you travel.

Murray Street Bridge is east of the Boardwalk, on the way toward Seabright and the harbour. It is not the walk from these hotels to Pacific Avenue. The city's walking tab, still marked as updated on 10 June 2026, says the bridge is closed to people on foot through September 2026. A 14 September 2026 report of the city's announcement said people on foot would still be able to cross after one eastbound vehicle lane reopened on 28 September 2026, and that East Harbor Access Road under the bridge stays closed. Construction continues through January 2028. If that side of town is part of your day, read the city project page and the 14 September report, then follow the signs.
Questions to settle before you book
Is downtown Santa Cruz walkable?
The commercial part of Pacific Avenue is, and it connects to the beach on foot. A published description puts that walk at about 15 to 20 minutes. The hotels on lower Pacific Avenue, San Lorenzo Boulevard and Riverside Avenue are in that system. The motel on Plymouth Street is not, and a page that calls the whole city walkable is not answering the street you will actually leave from.
Are the Boardwalk rides open every day?
No. The park is open year-round and you can walk in without paying an entrance fee, including on days the rides are closed. The hours page listed the rides as closed on 28, 29 and 30 September 2026, with the arcades and bowling still open. After those dates, use the calendar rather than assuming a summer timetable.
Can a family with a pushchair skip the car?
From Bay Front Inn, Drift Inn or Torch Lite Inn, the published walks are short enough that you do not need the car for the Boardwalk and the beach. Strollers are allowed on the Boardwalk property and banned from the queues and the attractions, and there is no designated place to leave one. West Cliff is the flat coastal path, with a steep hill at Bay Street if you are coming up from the Wharf.
Does the beach shuttle run in autumn?
Not as a regular service. The Santa Cruzer is weekends and holidays, noon to 8pm, from Memorial Day through Labor Day. A late September stay does not get that shuttle. Route 34's published weekday timetable finishes in the early evening and does not name a stop on Plymouth Street, so it is not the evening answer for National 9 Motel either.
Choose this one for the Wharf and the start of West Cliff, on the hotel's own 6-minute figure.
Choose this one for a Boardwalk walk of about 8 minutes and free parking on San Lorenzo Boulevard.
Choose this one for the Boardwalk. Keep the Wharf at about 11 minutes, not five.
